Not much to report from around here. We decided to get the walls finished up before leaving, as the thought of doing it later just sounded too awful to contemplate. I’m glad we did too, because the smell is pretty intense and will be for a few days apparently.
In the end we chose not to stain it at all. We wanted to keep it light so just chose a clear satin polyurethane to seal it up with. Looked pretty dark at first, but dried nicely. Really made the wood grain pop. Second coat goes on tomorrow. High traffic spots will get a third probably.
Basically I’m just doing anything and everything I can at this point to avoid dealing with the trim carpentry.

Looks fantastic. I am counting down the days until we’re taking our own Airstream out of winter storage.
Can’t wait to get out there again.
Headed to Mexico straight away or spending some time in the US? I cross the border tomorrow morning! *grin*
Gonna explore a bit of the US we haven’t been to before. After that our plans are up in the air but will include other countries in the not too distant future.
Are you keeping track of the cost of all this?? I am curious. It all looks great so far.
Of course we are. After we hit the road I’ll put it all together in a post.
I can hear Willie Nelson singing ” On the road again, I just cant wait to get on the road again ……
“Goin’ places that I’ve never been.
Seein’ things that I may never see again
And I can’t wait to get on the road again.
On the road again –
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We’re the best of friends.
Insisting that the world keep turning our way”

Muzza.
Love us some Willie.I want to park our bus right next to his. 🙂
Totally agree with your decision on not staining – much prettier and brighter this way.
Yeah, we think it’ll look great with the couches. Can’t wait to get it all together now.
Good decision. Best to get the wood sealed up before the inevitable small, greasy finger prints get on there.
Mine or the kids’?
You’re doing a great job. I’ve been following you guys off and on since I stumbled on your VW trip. Kind of living vicariously through you. Thanks.
I live in British Columbia and after you bought the Travco I spied one for sale on a local online classified site. The only photo they had was of a really nice shorter unit. They did mention that it wasn’t the one. I went and looked at it and wow what a mess. Someone had cut out the side behind the driver and made a slide-out. Go figure.
Keep up the good work and enjoy your travels.
Don
A slide out! Ha. Why does everything always have to be made bigger? If anything, I’d shave a couple of feet off of the bus.
How about another traveling song by Johnny Cash:
I’ve been everywhere, man
I’ve been everywhere, man
Crossed the desert’s bare, man
I’ve breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I’ve had my share, man
I’ve been everywhere
I’ve been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma

Tocopilla, Barranquilla, and Padilla, I’m a killer
[Chorus]

[Chorus]

This is soooo cool! Good thing you did finish the walls before you were all moved in, the smell is horrible. It looks great!
We really need to paint the outside of our old, cruddy looking camper that we do of course love but the outside is rough. Its not an old gemstone like yours and the natural cool color it comes with….so thanks for being so inspiring!
No doubt in my mind you do what is right for your children and they are so blessed! You guys are going to have a blast!
You’re right. I had no idea how strong the smell would be. Ali just about lost it on me when I came home and threw my dirty clothes in with the rest of them.
