There were some vibrant colors and some decent coral growth around Port Resolution, and there were also lots of cool coral canyons to freedive through in the deeper waters. There really wasn’t much swimming around, though.
Must make for a long day hauling in nets with just a few small fish inside.
One of the cruisers on another boat was able to help out one of the small villages nearby with some solar power charging issues they were having. To show their gratitude they invited everyone ashore for some food for everyone, and kava for the men. The food was great—mostly root vegetables—and the local women seemed well pleased with our contributions as well.
One of the ways they turn the kava root into a drink is by having the young men chew it up and spit the saliva juice into a bowl. Our host, Donovan, was quick to point out to us that the two bottles he had brought with him on this night were not made this way. He had brought his kava to another village that has a grinder. They make a powder out of it and then pour water over it through a filter. While not the preferred method for him, he was happy to please our weak cruiser stomachs.
Donovan was a great host and a really nice guy. He asked us to spread the word to other cruisers that his village hidden deep on the inside of the bay (versus the main village which is right next to the anchorage) wants them to visit. His English was perfect, and he told us it was from speaking with cruisers his whole life, and he just wants his kids to be able to do the same thing. Anyway, this is me leaving Donovan’s invite for future cruisers to Port Resolution.
The next day we were off. As we rounded out of the bay to the other side of the island we got a good view of the smoking Mount Yasur.

How was the Kava?
Kava was good. Couple of coconut shells worth and I could feel a bit of tingling on the tongue, but that’s about it. The local guys tell us they drink 15-20 cups to get their desired effect, whatever that is.
