The Clan McWilliams is a 423′ long copra steamship that sunk in Neiafu harbor way back in 1927. A fire started in one of the holds and once it was out of control everybody on the ship took off. Everyone but the captain and an engineer (who may or may not have been locked inside in order to keep him from bailing like everyone else). They tried to make a run for the shallows, but didn’t make it, and sunk in 120′ of water in this rather small harbor.
We waited for a couple of days of calm weather before heading down for the dive, and from what I’ve seen online, we had amazing visibility. The top of the ship starts at about sixty feet and dropped down to about 85 near the middle. We weren’t able to stay down too long diving at that depth, so didn’t see the whole ship, but what we did see was great.
It’s been nearly one hundred years down here, so coral growth was thick, but it was still very easy to discern the different parts of the ship. Railings and cranes still stood solid.
Lowe pretending to walk the plank and fall headfirst into the waters below.
Hanging out for a decompression stop on our way out. All in all, one of the coolest dives we’ve done in a while. Wrecks are a family favorite, for sure.
