The Amazing Race

Door and draft stoppers.

Wandering through houses is actually pretty fun. Especially in these older downtown areas where homes have been around a long time, have gone through countless renovations and additions/subtractions over the years, and you just never know what you’ll find behind the next door. “Oh, wow, a courtyard!” “How many bedrooms are we up to now?” “This must be a closet door. Nope, a circular staircase to a fourth floor. Who knew?”

Ouest has had her ears pierced so many times, but has never had much luck in keeping them infection free. Probably due to jumping in the ocean too soon. Here we go with another attempt. This one would stick.

It didn’t take long to find a community for the kids here in San Miguel. On this particular day they joined in the annual “The Amazing Race.” Teams of four teens raced around town on foot, bus, and taxi to different landmarks and businesses to complete challenges. They covered the entire town. For days afterwards we’d be walking around and they’d point to a place and say, “Oh we were here. We did… here.”

While the kids were off racing around town, Ali and I went out for breakfast, which for me always means chilaquiles.

Then continued on the house hunt.

A few hours later we met up with the kids at the closing ceremony for the race.

They had a great time, and managed to score third place. Not bad at all, especially being so new to the town. The prizes were kindly donated by local businesses. First was horseback riding, second was rock climbing, and third was… an online course to learn about AI. Let’s just say that prize didn’t exactly make anyone else jealous. Schoolwork as a prize? We did make them take the course, and they both did enjoy it and learn something, despite themselves. So, thank you to the AI lady. All in all, a really fun day for all the kids. So far we’re finding it to be a really nice community here that’s easy to get involved with.

We showed up a little late to a local market one afternoon, but I found the taco guy still had some chorizo left on the grill.

Kind of funny we spotted this guy a couple of times and both times he looked as if he was being filmed for a cologne ad, or something.

Eggs filled with confetti were everywhere this day. I can’t remember the purpose, exactly, but kids were having a good time busting them over each other’s heads.

  1. I love your description of the houses and how you never know what you’ll find. They look great! No bland, “boxy white colonials.”

And I can see how good SMA will be for your kids. So cool that they could just fall right in with a group of new friends and be out doing stuff. I was never very good at that, but they sure are. I’m sure growing up cruising got them in practice.
