Ouest’s jumper finally arrived today, but was too big. Well last week when I posted to a Mazatlan forum that we were looking for a nanny one of the replies came from a lady who said her husband was a tailor. So I contacted her and found out that their business is like three blocks away from us. Because it’s Mexico and that’s just the way things seem to work out down here.
So Ouest and I walked over there after school this afternoon. The business turned out to be in their home, where we were greeted like long lost friends. The wife met us at the door and invited us in. Soon the husband came down. Then they called down their twelve-year-old daughter to come meet us and sit with us. We talked (I should mention they spoke good English) for about half an hour before the husband finally clapped his hands and stood up to have a look at Ouest’s dress. He pinned her up and told us it would be ready this weekend. Then we talked some more. Before long they were offering me a house to stay in over on Stone Island—free of course. And before we left they insisted that I bring Ali and Lowe when we come to pick up the dress. Are all tailors this friendly? (Cost for taking in Ouest’s uniform 100 pesos/$7.68.)
A few days back we went to get pizza from Moreno’s Pizza here in town. Last time we were in Mazatlan we ate there regularly. By far the best pizza we’ve had in Mexico. I mean, homemade italian sausage, come on. When we got there all the air in my chest left me as we found our pizza place had been replaced with a hot dogs and hamburger stand. Why God? Why!
Anyway, so we placed that ad for the nanny, and who should reply? The owner of the pizza place. We’d already hired someone else, but man, we were that close to having good pizza again.
As for the nanny, when we originally hired her we weren’t planning on putting Ouest in school. We hired her for two hours a day to teach the kids some Spanish and give us a break. Well with Ouest gone to school now in the mornings it seemed pretty silly to have her come and just watch Lowe, especially since we get break time when he naps anyway. So in the end we decided to just have her come once a week to give Lowe a little more Spanish exposure and to have someone new to play with for a couple of hours.
When I just went up and wrote the title for this post it struck me how much we sound like some fancy rich folk—tailors and nannies.

WOW I just cant believe that Ouest is that big! I have been following you guys since before Ali was even pregnant with her. Love the pictures of her in the school clothes. Such a big girl now!
You guys are doing the right thing!
On a side note I am re-reading part of Live on the Margin for about the 5th time. Trying to get my brain wrapped around “the Greeks”. Not easy at first FYI.
Remember I had to learn the Greeks once too. And I had to do it on the job with a boss quizzing me, traders asking me for their positions, options brokers asking me for the hedge on a trade, and two phones to my ears with clients asking for quotes. 🙂
Getting to know the ‘locals’ is a wonderful benefit of being grounded for a while. Ouest will have joy making friends with the children in her school and learn so much.
I think I pick-up one of your radio stations here in North Texas!
I don’t own any radio stations.
You are rich folks, in the things that really matter.
