Worst thing about La Cruz Marina has to be the fact that the beaches around here are: A) not very good swimming beaches for kids, and B) disgusting. The beach 100 yards from our boat is so nasty that we have only gone one time. It’s like a giant toilet bowl for dogs. I’m not blaming the roughly 10,000 gringo boat/dog owners in this marina because there are certainly plenty of neighborhood mutts wandering around, but I’m not not blaming them either. One thing you will never see in Mexico is a dog owner with a plastic bag over their hand.
I digress. We went grocery shopping today, came home all hot and sweaty, changed into swimsuits, and beelined for the pool. Both of the kids love the pool, Lowe even claps when you ask him if he wants to go swimming. Anyway, we walk around the marina to the pool only to find a chain on the door and hoses sticking out of the water. Ouest was heartbroken. She actually cried real tears. “Me not happy Papa, me not happy.”
Ouest’s swimming has progressed amazingly in the past month or two. She now swims laps. Like, dozens of laps. She goes and goes and goes, and everyone asks if she is alright and she just spits out water, smiles, and says, “I’m okay.” I must say I am quite proud of her. And Lowe looks like he is on track to swim even sooner than she did.
She didn’t believe me when I told her we’d have fun on the boat with the water hose, but I’ll be damned if she didn’t.

Great shots, as usual. Our boys just experienced their first jellyfish stings. The older one says he is NEVER going in the ocean again. Might be the pool for us, for now.
Ouest got a pretty bad sting right on the inner thigh last season, though I don’t think she really understood what it was—thankfully.
I get the impression that Ouest is a tough cookie. She could probably take my 6-year old…
I used to love this site but I just can’t handle it anymore. FOR GODS SAKE will you ease up on the photos and stories about your kids!!!
Gotcha. Less pictures of kids, more of trees and water. Less stories of my kids and more about bilge pumps. Anything else I can do for you, or will that do it?
Excuuuuuuuzzzze Pat!!! How awful it is to see such an involved, loving Dad. We teachers in the reading audience applaud him! Many of the problems that we encountered in the classroom probably could have been helped if each child had a Dad who was as involved in their life. Yes, there are some single Dads who do a wonderful job; but it seemed that in most cases, Mom was left to support her kids in all ways. Love the way that Pat and Ali work together! Keep those loving family pics coming, Pat!
Ditto.
Dude, it’s a family blog. This is not some paid sailing adventure site. Maybe you should check back in with the blog in about 20 years when the kids are off to college? Sheesh. But then the blog will probably be discussing Depends and dentures. Maybe time to switch over to one of the kidless adventurer blogs? Adios.
Just a shot in the dark….but you can stop typing https://www.bumfuzzle.com and hitting enter? Just a thought!
Seriously, I have been reading this blog pre-babies and now post-babies. Idk, if ya don’t like the blog the way it is then move to other blogs. Bums keep ups the fantastic blog. We hope to one day follow in your footsteps. 🙂
you seem to be a SMALL minority here, Calhoon. Others of us LOVE seeing the pictures of Lowe, and Ouest, and hearing about life on a boat with 2 small children. We out in this magical world called the internet are the Audience, and Pat,Ali, Ouest and Lowe are not only the Actors.. on this site, and in the Bumfuzzle world.. they are the Alpha and the Omega. ( my words, not theirs.. I would never presume to put such words into their mouths) I dont know you at ALL, Calhoon, but I doubt you truly understand how beautiful children are and what a blessing they bring to peoples lives, based on your comment. You are completely allowed your opinion, of course; just please know that the vast majority of Bum followers cherish the kids/family stuff.
Thanks for sharing all your sweet kiddo photos and life aboard insights…Also-so fun to see Rebel Hearts little lady in your photos-such a small world when we like the same things.
That is so rude!!! This blog reflects life on board with kids. Therefore there will be posts about kids!! If you have children then you will realise how much they dominate your day. Every minute with them is amazing. We home educated and travelled with our gorgeous children for 3 years. Our children love looking back at our blog and reading about their adventures. Keep the blog as it is.
I started reading the blog pre kids too, but I like that the kids are the main focus now. I have a 3 month old daughter and my wife and I are taking steps toward “living on the margin” because of her. I have always wanted to sail/cruise and thought I will “some day”. I thought having my daughter would postpone it for years, but now feel an overwhelming sense of urgency to get on with it. Seeing the stories and pictures here show not only it is doable, but is a much better way to raise kids.
This is a fantastic blog just the way it is! I truly enjoy when I get a notification in my inbox to live vicariously through you! One day I will convince my wife that New York is overrated..
Keep the blog the way it is! Love it. More people should be like you and Ali, totally involved with raising your kids. There would be a lot less problems in the world if that happend.
Love this blog, as an ex cruiser I love reading about your travels from a different perspective!! Your kids are so cute and it is great you guys are able to spend this time with them!! Please keep the stories and pictures coming….it’s really slow here in NE in the winter so more stories on Fridays would make the day go by faster 🙂
Some people clearly have nothing. better. to. do. than go around saying crappy things on blogs. Sheesh.
I am going to throw in my two cents here. This Calhoon made a rude statement, true. He used to like the site, now he doesn’t. He really should just … NOT FOLLOW IT if he is bored with the kid/family pics.. but what if he stopped to consider what Pat and Ali have been about from the start, which is sharing their experiences. Their world. Their world now has kids in it. Correction, their kids are now their world. I have met them, socialized with them, and know firsthand.. they are full time parents. THAT is their world. The site just cant exist without them anymore. Sorry, Calhoon…. change the channel.
Well, I don’t mind reading about kids at all. Especially considering our plans to go full-time cruising with a kid in a couple years. Actually, just seeing your pics makes me want to do it, and there are no doubts it is good for kids!
