This is what happens to the freezer when we plug into shore power for a few weeks. That’s the freezer—the fridge looks the same. We thawed them both out yesterday so they’ll hopefully work better when we get underway again. Our freezer is so ridiculously large and deep that we’ve filled the bottom half with big bottles of water. Our permanent ice box.
I can count on one hand the memories I have of Ouest falling asleep like this. She just has never been the type of kid to fall asleep randomly. But the night before last she had a bad night of sleep for some reason and by dinner at five she could hardly keep her eyes open and couldn’t eat a thing. A little before six she got ready for bed and went into her room. Ali was finishing up doing some dishes and told her a couple of times that she’d be right in. As she rinsed the last dish she looked over and there was Ouest.
Lowe has begun climbing on everything—with no thought whatsoever on how he might go about getting down again. And yes, there is a total disregard of our pleas to “stop climbing on there.” And there, and there, and there too.
This is the pre-beach ritual. Who needs a coffee to go to the beach you ask? Oh, only the people who are there by NINE a.m. Kids up and at ’em by 6:30, Ouest begins to ask to get dressed by 7:00, breakfast at 7:30, random playing, sunblock applying, dressing, tooth brushing, and we’re out the door. It’s now 8:30 and we’re on our way to the beach.
We video called my mom today which the kids absolutely love. They’ve become so good at it that today Ouest said, “Grammy, play hide and seek with me. You count.” So that’s exactly what we did. Ouest hid while Grammy counted nice and loud. At ten I carried her around the boat for the five seconds or so that it takes Ouest to get too impatient with the game and come bursting out of her hiding spot laughing.

Hey Pat,
In the midst of my freezer problems (Frigoboat) I was told by a tech that to keep bottles of frozen water in the bottom of the freezer was the wrong thing to do. He told me the freezer still has to work to keep them frozen, which makes perfect sense. He said the best thing to to use to take up the extra space on the bottom was packing peanuts or the equivalent. The freezer doesn’t try to or work at freezing that space. As we’re cruising too I’m still looking for peanuts to use. What do you think? Hope this helps…Sid
Thanks Sid. That does make perfect sense. My other thought was maybe that inflatable foam stuff inside of balloons. But I’ll check for packing peanuts before I go messing around on that little experiment. 🙂
Awww Ouest is so cute!! Our daughter Rachel (22 months) is the same way. She fell asleep in her strolled down in florida visiting family last week for the first time EVER! I couldn’t believe my eyes! I had to take a photo because I knew my husband wouldn’t believe me if I didn’t have proof – haha! They just are so excited about the world that they don’t want to miss a thing 🙂 Safe travels to you and yours.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for the mention of the Newman podcast. Laird Hamilton was a good interview and look forward to Nick’s. the Wave was great and now in to Lve on the Margin. Bought several copies for friends liking it so much. Great pics.
Cool. Glad you liked it. Nick’s interview goes live tomorrow. http://www.thenewmanpodcast.com
That’s a great idea with the insulating foam in a can. I would think it would be easier to find then peanuts. Now I’m thinking you could use a cardboard box or just flat cardboard pieces to make a form for the foam. You could trim the cured foam to fit the freezer just right. As a bonus you have a stable platform to sit the food on. On our next stop if there is a hardware store or Home Depot near by, I’m going to go the foam route. Hey, thanks for the foam tip! Even better then the peanuts…
