There’s a small point of rocks at the beach that we normally go to and as the tide drops every day the locals roll up their sleeves and start digging underneath the rocks. I was curious so I asked one of them what he was looking for. “Plata y oro.” Silver and gold. I haven’t seen any hooting and hollering, so I don’t think anyone has hit it rich while we’ve been here, but they are deadly serious when they get to digging. Right down to their shoulders their arms disappear underneath the rocks. And they aren’t looking for dust, they’re looking for nuggets, because all they do is pull up handfuls, shake it around, and toss it aside. I did a little internet digging and it turns out there are huge mineral deposits in the area, or at least there were back in the gold rush heydays. As soon as the guys leave their holes the kids jump in and use them as a swimming pool, so who knows, maybe Ouest or Lowe will come up with a big old nugget one of these days.
This afternoon we did a little interview with the Glen Cove Yacht Club. Lowe hammed it up for the camera, while Ouest sat nearby with her little LeapFrog laptop, smiling, and talking into it. “Hi, I’m Ouest. Oh, hi, I’m Ouest.” Over and over just as serious as can be. Amazing how our kids mimic us. Scary actually.
