Sayulita Sting

Spending an afternoon in one of our favorite places.

We brought along the kids’ friends from the boat next door. The four of them have been having some great times together. With this lifestyle it’s not every day that they get not one, but two good friends to hang with at the same time.

You can tell a place is getting a little too popular when the price of a mango on a stick is double what it is anywhere else. Fifty pesos. I thought he was joking at first. In a touristy spot like the Puerto Vallarta boardwalk it would be thirty. In a non-touristy area it’s twenty.

While out swimming with Ouest I stepped down and got nailed with the instantly recognizable stingray stab. In the space of one second you feel the squish of the stingray body under your foot and before you can react the tail has whipped around in defense and stabbed you. The pain from the venom hits in that same second. Please don’t tell me about doing the stingray shuffle (drag your feet through the sand when walking in the water) as I spend entirely too much time in the ocean to be dragging my feet around all the time.

I’m sure I’ve talked about the pain from these before, so I won’t go into it again. Suffice to say, this is no bee sting.

Ali was kind enough to score me a bottle of near boiling water after fifteen minutes or so, which alleviates a lot of the pain, but beyond that there isn’t much to do but suck it up and wait for it to pass.

One thing I like about Sayulita is that everyone comes there to have a good time and put off a friendly vibe. These guys sat down and wouldn’t stop offering us things. They’d buy oysters and immediately ask if we wanted some.

Elevating and drinking a beer also seems to help with the stingray pain.

I didn’t even notice until now that Ouest is busily sharing her taco with a dog.

  1. Feel better! Looks like a gorgeous beach and perfect place to hang out with the kids and their friends!

  2. Care::
    there is high risk of infection. It’s important to wash and disinfect the area immediately and obtain a tetanus vaccine or booster if needed.

  3. Got stung in almost the exact same location on my foot at Blacks beach in san diego, 2005. The lifeguards had a microwave in their truck and gave me boiling water. 45 minutes of mash pain. And then, the walk up the cliff with a hole in my foot. But, the pain from the hole was a joke compared to the venom.

  4. The whole thing looks amazing, tacos on the beach, sun, sand, beautiful ocean,
    Friendly people, it sucks about the sting ray, glad you could put your feet up and have a few 🍻, I’m sure Ali took good care of you. Sounds very painful 😣
    Love and kisses from SEATTLE ❤️

  5. You’re a tough sea farer…you’ll be fine….I thought someone had to pee on the bite….or is that a jelly fish? I got bit by a scorpion a few years back and did a screaming hop dance…lol..

  6. Oh Pat, those stingrays love you! I remember a few years back you stepped on one and the kids were in the water with you and you didn’t want to scare them so instead of hollering out in pain you were dancing around and singing. Remember that Ali?🤣
