San Juan Social Distancing

When we were cruising over to San Juan I noticed this miles-long stretch of empty beach with a road right behind it. Figuring that we could easily find a spot of sand we could have all to ourselves, we loaded into the rental car and drove out there. Sand dollars by the thousands—easily the most I’ve ever seen in one spot—covered the shallow ocean floor. There was palm tree shade, tide pools, small shells to comb through along the beach, and not another person for at least half a mile. All in all it was a great spot.

Unfortunately, like all over the U.S., COVID numbers have started cranking again—coinciding perfectly with dirt cheap tourist flights from the mainland opening up. A bunch of new rules have gone into effect. Beaches are open to exercise, technically, but because it’s basically impossible to distinguish a group of people exercising their elbows by lifting 12 oz cans of beer, and a family swimming and walking a beach, everyone is just getting kicked off. It wasn’t too long before the police drove up—followed shortly after by their sweeper vehicle—to chase us off.

Topping up the tanks. If we have to leave in a hurry at any point I don’t want to be short on fuel. Cheapest fuel we’ve ever put in Bumfuzzle, and delivered right at the dock. Gotta like that setup.

Old San Juan is basically a ghost town.

The area under the fort walls has hundreds of cats hanging around. There is a group that raises money to feed and fix them, and they have placed dozens of small covered shelters in the bushes where they place heaping bowls of fresh cat food every day. Obviously not the ideal situation for the cats, but they are a whole lot better off than they could be.

  1. Love your photos. Great shot of the Austin Healy. Would be fun to go ripping around in something like that on a nice day.

Bummer about the beach. That one looked spectacular. Let’s just hope the virus stuff is over sooner vs later. Take care and safe travels.

    1. Well since we aren’t up on the local news here – we found out that the beaches are completely closed on Sundays. M-Sat for exercise, swimming, surfing but no sitting or gathering. Sundays are stay-home day, so everything must be closed and no alcohol sales at all. We are hopeful for the fall…

    1. Thanks for thinking of us, but we’re not really interested in spreading information or disinformation about COVID here on Bumfuzzle. We’ll leave that for the Facebookers.
