San Blas

Went into town today. Nothing especially exciting happening there—in fact it was pretty darn sleepy. We walked round and round and I’m sure the locals were thinking, “How many times are they going to walk through the plaza today?” Seven, thank-you very much. The kids got ice cream, got accosted by an eight fingered homeless man, got banana bread (which for some strange reason I can’t figure, San Blas is famous for), got attacked by no-see-ums, and finally, got tired. We’re three days into a new time zone and Ali and I still haven’t been able to bring ourselves to letting the kids have their extra hour.

A couple of boats pulled in today. We’re all swinging around within a couple hundred feet of each other. Never mind that this bay is miles wide and a mile deep. It’s a weird bay actually. We’re anchored in thirteen feet of water about half a mile from one shore and close to a mile from another. You could move in closer but by doing so you run the risk of having the no-see-ums find you on your boat—and believe me, you do not want that here. Those things are unbelievable.

      1. Perfect retort! Yay you guys. New reader here via the Wynns – love your site; envy your life; ordered your book. Thanks for sharing so some of us can live vicariously!

  1. I remember rolling into town back in 1990 for a couple of hard tequila drinking nights with the locals. The most amazing long slow curls for body surfing. Easily 50 to 75 yard runs. Great memories. Did the brass wing nut (dog for the porthole window) work? If not i found a place in Miami with a good variety.

  2. Pat, love your new book and I left a review on Amazon. Does any of these smaller towns in Mexico interest you as far a home base of sorts?
what about over in Holbox or Isla Mujeres? I would love to hear your thoughts on those type places for people who want to “Live on the Margin”. Also I am long RGR and SWHC via call options. Thanks for everything!

  3. Pat, what has happened? I see Crocs on Lowe, once you start wearing Crocs it is a slippery slope to Hawaiian print shirts…

  4. We spent Christmas 2004 in the same anchorage. There were 5-6 boats in the anchorage (all piled up on top of each other, of course) and one of the boats made us all copies of Neil Diamond’s Christmas album on CD. Neil Diamond, no see-ums, and Christmas lunner at a palapa … one of my top 5 Christmases.
