We decided not to cross at Tijuana and instead head east to the Mexicali border crossing. We are planning to head down to San Felipe and then backtrack over to the Pacific side of Baja. Anyway, that means we have found ourselves in El Centro, famous for being the largest city in the US located completely below sea level. So that’s something, right?

The day we left Minnesota in the bus Ali visited the dentist because of a toothache. It turned out to be a cracked molar. They glued it and told her it might not bother her for a week, or it might be a year. We had hoped it would hang on for a while and we’d be able to see our dentist in Puerto Vallarta to have it properly taken care of, but a few days ago it started to ache again.

So we got online last night and found a place in Mexicali with lots of good reviews that didn’t sound like they had all been written by the same person. We called this morning and they said they’d meet us at noon out front of the Hotel del Norte—just outside the border crossing—to pick us up.

We got picked up as planned. Ali went in to get checked out and I went for a walk around the neighborhood with the kids. We couldn’t find a taco stand so had to settle on ice cream at the OXXO instead. Back at the office we found out Ali was in for all sorts of fun stuff and it’d be another hour or two. They then took me and the kids next door to somebody’s brother-in-law’s house where we could hang out and play on the swing set in the yard.

End of the story is that a root canal is now in the works and we’ll be in El Centro doing the border jump without the bus for a few more days.

Just talking about a root canal makes me feel old. It sounds like something that only Boomers have done. We are teetering right on the top of the slope now, aren’t we?

I like how they added Mexican Food to the bottom of this sign—just in case the name didn’t tip you off already.

Lowe just loves posing for pictures while Ouest directs him to, “Say cheese and crackers, Lowe!”

  1. West should draw us all a picture, seems she loves it so much, something like ‘ Hello people who read mummy and daddies blog ! ‘ with a picture of your bus! heheheheheh..

    Trent.

      1. Oh okay, i figured that. I Think you posted her bus picture. Maybe you should explain to her what a blog is, if you think you could do it properly in 5-year-old speak.

        1. I don’t know, I can’t think of one good reason why a 5-year-old needs to know what a blog is. She rarely even sees us on a computer. We save all that stuff for at night.

          1. Perhaps you are already doing this but it might be a good time for her to start journaling. She takes pictures. Choosing one and dictating a sentence which you or Ali write for her each day (or week) could be a good start on her writing career. Helps in reading also. Develops language skills. Just a thought from a retired teacher. (Good for Lowe, too.)

  2. RE: We are teetering right on the top of the slope now, aren’t we?

Reminds me of James Taylor but all I can latch onto just now is the next line
“We might as well enjoy the way down”…..
And from my vantage point of being 67 and one of the “Old Boomers”, I don’t think you’ve peaked yet. Not nearly. And you are already enjoying the ride.

    Keep on truckin’ onnnn…

  3. This Boomer is having cataract surgery today. You’ll know you are over the edge when that happens.

  4. Just missed you 🙁 by a few days; I returned from San Felipe last weekend via Mexicali. I kept looking for the bus along my road trip as I figured you weren’t too far away… Happy travels in the warmer weather 🙂

  5. Great photos as usual. And I just love hearing you kids talk about getting old. 😀 See you in La Paz if you’re still there mid-December.

  6. Hope Ali is feeling better soon. I know the bother of cracked molars, I think all of mine are cracked or capped or bridged. Mine were caused by stress, surly hers weren’t.

  7. Just want to say what a great photo the of the older chap with the yellow bag is. He couldn’t have been more colour coordinated with that scene if he’d tried.

The photography is outstanding as always.

  8. Hoping everyone is healthy and happy. What is the interesting stuff in the blue bucket? It looks a bit like peppers but the color is more like nuts.

  9. We also have those runaway truck ramps many places on the toll roads that run through the Sierra Madre Mountains here in Mexico. What makes me chuckle is the added caution, “Yield the Right of Way to Runaway Trucks” Good Advice!

    1. Every time I see those Runaway Truck signs I cant help but think about the poor parents worried about their trucks that have run away from home 😉

  10. I can’t find the post about the new camera you decided to go with? I’m looking for a new camera, and was curious what you guys just replaced yours with?

  11. Root Canal may not be the best course with a broken tooth. They kill the nerve, (or 3 with a molar) then glue the tooth. Down the road the glue fails and the crack becomes a break. Now they want to pull the tooth. The better choice and perhaps less painful and much less expensive is to have the tooth pulled now.
