Redwoods

Slowly meandering south.

Hiding somewhere nearby Paul Bunyan is a guy with a microphone, and from far up above the kids comes a deep voice saying hello, and having a short conversation with them. Ouest thought it was amazing, Lowe didn’t figure out what was going on. Ouest was still yelling goodbye half way across the parking lot, and asking me why he got turned into a statue. I told her environmentalists did it.

Welcome to the Redwoods, kids. Nature’s playground.

Ali: “Look guys, a Banana Slug.”

Kids: “Cool.”

Me: (somewhat amazed) “How do you know that’s what it’s called?”

Ali: “I saw it on a postcard.”

Truth: You don’t need guidebooks—all the knowledge you need while traveling can be found on the back of a postcard.

  1. Ali, do you remember Paul Bunyan saying hi to you in Brainerd? Is that the same Paul Bunyan? Did he move all the way to CA?

  2. My girls and I still talk about Paul and his blue ox, and it’s been over ten years since we visited. Some memories never go away.

  3. Camped there in a BMW 320i Turbo we picked up to drive to Seattle (drive service) when I was hitch hiking around the US in 1984 as a green 19 year old.

Later, on a BMW R80G/S after many years. Redwoods still make me go quiet.

  4. wow, it’s crazy, you guys, seeing you in our backyard! If you do plan on coming to the Lost Coast (- you may have passed the turnoffs already though, judging from where it seems like you are from the photos), you should holla!

We’ll be leaving to head south again at the end of October, so we might catch up with you guys. We’re entering Mexico via Arizona this time though!

  5. You are in Northern California, you have the perfect aged children, and you love the environment. I cannot believe you do not know about the Banana Slug String Band (http://www.bananaslugstringband.com) and therefore all about banana slugs. Go see them in person if you can, but at least you should get some tunes to share with the children.

  6. The photo of the kids on the fence is one of the most beautiful photos I have ever seen. Classic. Well done.

  7. When Paul Bunyan spoke to my 4 year old, Evan instantly said, “that’s not real, right”? About every 2 minutes after that we had to reassure him that a 40 foot tall person was not roaming the earth, especially one who wanted to talk to little boys.

  8. Hi guys, you’re in our old stomping grounds, we lived in Arcata for almost three years. If you get good internet, look up and listen to the This American Life episode where they talk to the guy who does the Paul Bunyan voice. All the best, Michael

  9. Yes, the new camera is really doing it. But I’m confused by what is shown in the kids on the fence photo. Is that a mirrored image they are seeing and further on a fence around the body of water?

  10. Almost fell off couch! watching movie=== Barefoot– this guy takes his kid to garage to show his prize possession== exact same RV as yours!! check it out!! Walden Creek RV steve -Shakopee – (actually live in 34 ft Dutch Star by Newmar) along the Florida beaches (Melbourne)

  11. I have lots of good memories of family vacations in the Redwood forest. The trees are so amazing. Thanks always for sharing your beautiful pics of one of my favorite vacation spots! 🙂
