Protected Waters

We had no idea this hike was going to be as strenuous as it was, or that the heat would be as stifling. We were smiling, but only at the absurdity of how hard it was. The kids mostly look like they are dying, but they weren’t, they were chugging all the water and leaving us in the dust all the way up.

Thanks to the Saharan dust cloud blowing across from Africa the views were pretty muted that day.

We kept reading about amazing red sunsets because of the Saharan sands, but all we had was a sun that looked like a moon and gray skies.

These little fish are like pets. As soon as we arrive on the beach they come hustling over, wait for you to move the sand around, swim through it, eat whatever it is they eat, and turn to wait for more. And it looks like they are smiling, so you can’t help but smile.

This guy patrols the same stretch of beach all day every day.

The water here really is wonderfully clear and clean. Throughout the Caribbean the water, no matter how clear it looked, would be littered with plastic, but somehow that isn’t the case here. I’ve only grabbed a couple pieces of garbage off the bottom in the past few weeks. If only we could turn all of the oceans into protected parks.
