Port Sandwich

After the headache of the Australian visa application process (many hours were committed to that project) it was a pleasant surprise to get an approval notice almost immediately. At least now we can arrive there and not be on any sort of schedule.

We also aren’t in any hurry here in Vanuatu. The country has so far exceeded everyone’s expectations. There are countless islands to explore, filled with well-protected anchorages, and nothing but the kindest people imaginable. Add to that three other boats with kids, and we’re a pretty content bunch of cruisers.

Look at map, identify a river, and set off in the dinghy to see what might be up it.

The river was navigable for a surprisingly long way. We motored for about half an hour, and spotted a couple of boats but not a single person. We eventually ran out of space at a nice spot for a swim where there was thick mud to be smeared on, and flowing fresh water to rinse off.

The greens in Vanuatu cover the spectrum.

Yeah, I’m still sort of addicted to my bubble blowing.

  1. Coming from Florida I must ask about creatures when you go upriver? Snakes, crocs, gators? Here we’re cautiously aware of them & of course in the ocean the sharks…..just wondering? Love the photos & playful bubbles. So glad you guys continue to have fun adventures, nice to hang out with fellow cruisers for awhile. Thanks for the info on a longer visa for Australia. When we went last year we just got 3 months, then had to leave & return. Next time we’ll do like youse & apply for 6 months up front.

    1. Vanuatu is surprisingly non-lethal. No venomous snakes or spiders. No gators, and only a couple of saltwater crocs reported a decade ago at northern islands (crocs washed in from the Solomon Islands or PNG). We never worry about sharks, and have actually been a bit disappointed by our failure to see many of them here.
