Normal Life

Lots going on the past week or so, but nothing really shareable.

I always write a little bit about our life at the end of my weekly newsletter for Wanderer Financial. I thought this was a nice story worth sharing here as well.

The other day I was returning a rental car, and while getting a ride back to the boat I got to talking with the rental lady. She told me she has lived in Aruba her whole life, but she has family in Bonaire, too. I told her about my life a bit, and she was immediately taken with the idea of both living on a boat, and having kids on a boat. She asked how old they were, then if they drive the “little boat,” which meant the dinghy. I said yes, and she followed that up by asking if they have blonde hair. Weird follow-up question, but yes. Then she laughed and said that last year she was visiting her family in Bonaire, having ice cream, when she watched in amazement as two children zipped up to the boardwalk in a little boat and picked up their father. That was me, after walking through town to pick up our laundry.

It struck me how something that seems so normal to us—we were just a family running errands, after all—was the same thing that struck her as so unique that she remembered it distinctly a year later. It also reminded me what a small world we live in. I can’t count how many times, just by talking to strangers, I’ve discovered that our lives have crossed before and that we share some random story like this one.
