Newport

We were driving past a casino the other day and Ali said, “People still go to those?” Disbelief—as if it hadn’t occurred to her. I thought that was pretty funny.

Here is something I’ve been thinking about for a few months now. You know those yellow signs you see when you’re coming up on a curve that tell you there is a turn ahead and thirty might be a good speed to hit it at? But then you blow through it at sixty and you wonder, “Why would they say thirty?” My whole life I wondered that—then I bought an RV. Now I know, those signs are for me. And the speed limit they mention is absolutely dead on. If it says thirty, I pin the bus at thirty. If I hit it at thirty-five I feel like I’m just on the edge of losing control. Forty and we’re as good as dead. So it may have taken forty years, but now I finally know.

So anyway, we’re back on the road. All is good. The bus is running so beautifully I can hardly stand it. I want to share this news with every stranger I meet. I used to think I enjoyed this bus, but now I realize I had no idea what it could be like. And hey, now I can actually have conversations with others in the bus while we are driving. Amazing.

The kids were excited to get back in the bus. They said goodbye to Grammy, then ran inside and started rifling through their room as if everything in it were new again.

We made haste for the coast, stopping for the night in a small State Park in Lincoln City.

Ouest is our postcard writer now. She fills out at least six a week, keeping everybody in the loop. This one is to Grandma and says, “I still love my pink boots! Love, Ouest.”

Lowe is always under Mama’s foot.

Our prediction that RV life would be easier after Labor Day was wrong. All the State Parks are still booked solid for the weekend. We ended up in a concrete jungle for a couple of nights. The kids couldn’t care less.

  1. Great to see you folks back on the road again and having so much fun with the kids! Safe travels.

  2. We just finished our trip up the coast; hopefully you’ll find it easier to find room in the State Parks the further down you go. Suggest that you look for ones that do not accept reservations, those were the easiest ones to get into for us in terms of empty space especially on weekends, Cape Blanco is one. Make sure to check out camping in the dunes however try and stay in the State Park as opposed to the Forest sites in order to avoid all the ATVs

    Enjoy

  3. When we took our 6 year old to Vegas last year, we spent 5 days hiking the state parks and 1 at Hoover Dam. One afternoon was devoted to seeing the strip. Evan loved seeing the Sphinx, Eiffel tower, pirate ships,Venice etc. He was convinced that there was more cool stuff inside these giant buildings and made us take him in there to see. When he saw the slot machines he was in disbelief that the building were just filled with slot machines and adults would just sit there in front of them. It seemed to trouble him at a deep level when he got what was going on. I had no good answer for him, and he never asked to look inside again.

  4. Perhaps a little off subject but when my children were small we lived in a beautiful valley outside of Reno. We had two horses that my daughter and I rode into the mountains and on the high plateaus around Reno….once while outside of Carson city we came upon A large
gate with a large sign advertising a “Ranch”. At the top of the crossmember on the gate was a rotating red light….my daughter said “Daddy A Ranch, do you think they have cows”…the only thing I could think of to say was yes honey, I’m sure they do.
