Lowe likes his trains, so when we heard about the steam train in Ely we figured it would be fun. And it was. The engine and the cars were all about a hundred years old, as were all of the men working the train. Everything about the place felt authentic—from the office, to the water tower, to the depot, it was all a step way back in time.
We sat down at a huge table, flung the windows open, and listened to a man who must have been among the first settlers in this town tell stories as we trudged along, coal smoke and embers filling the air.
I think we all enjoyed that little excursion more than we expected to. Though after about an hour both of the kids were saying they were ready to go back to the bus. They’re homebodies.

Two of the happiest Lowe pictures yet!
Spent a night in Ely, oh, a decade or so ago. I was riding east, back from SFO and SEA on an old BMW airhead – still current then.
As I rolled into town at the end of the day, a guy waved me down. A fellow BMW rider. He heard me coming for “60 or 70 miles away…” He gave me the down low on where to stay and where to eat. It was a great stop.
You guys have a lot of travel experience…..as a life style. What is the most cost effective way to do this? Boat, car, etc?
Go to the bottom of our home page, on the left there are all of our expenses pages. Short answer: Car. But not by as much as many would think.
