Neue Freunde

A couple of days ago a German family came rolling in and parked up next to us. Out of their VW rolled a girl and a boy, each just a few months younger than our own. This friendship did not take long to blossom.

She was totally focused on picking up shells, and saw this wave too late. Of course this was right before dinner and we had told the kids we would just go take a walk before we ate. “No getting wet!”

Still got it!

Of course once you are this wet you might as well go all in.

No, this wasn’t dinner. Lunch the next day.

Ouest absorbing some German here. The girls loved looking through each other’s books. In Germany kids learn English from first grade on, so their kids hadn’t picked it up yet. Lack of a common language did nothing to curtail the friendship though.

The best part about being back on the mainland is the plazas. In Baja the towns just don’t have the same vibrancy and sense of community that we find in about every town on the mainland. Baja is like a different country. Not worse—different. In Baja we enjoy the beaches and the wildness stretching almost everywhere, but the mainland is what we really love about Mexico. It’s more spirited, more cultural, and all around just more interesting to us.

I got a bit of bus work done the past couple of days. The biggest project off the list was changing the tranny fluid. I’ve had a leaky gasket on the pan for a couple of months now, so besides the fact that we’ve put this tranny to the test we really just needed to stop the leaking. Fortunately the pan is extremely easy to access, and was easy to remove. New gasket, filter, fresh smelly tranny fluid, and even a new ground cable, should have the transmission continue its smooth shifting ways for many more miles.

  1. Adorable. Watching little kid friendships blossom (in nanoseconds) is one of the many beauties of having (and traveling) with kids. So fun.

    1. It was a newer VW California with pop top. Cool rig, but certainly not old enough for me to take pictures. 🙂

    1. I had the very same thought when reading this post and looking at the photos of the darling fast friends. I remember how easy it was to make friends as a child and wish it were still so simple as an adult!

    2. You know, in the traveler community I think it still is pretty easy. Maybe not as easy as it is with the kids, but still, having such a common thread (boat or RV) makes an ice breaker conversation pretty painless.
