It’s only 22 miles over to Roatan, from Utila, and we had very light winds forecast, so we headed out not expecting much trouble. It was only as we got out there that we realized just how much the overnight winds had kicked up the swell right on our nose. We began bouncing immediately and it didn’t stop for the next two hours. Since we’d been expecting calm seas we hadn’t taken any dramamine, and by hobby-horsing mile-20 me and the kids were all looking pretty green. It was a big relief to get tucked in behind Roatan.
A packed anchorage wasn’t what we had thought we’d find, but is what you get when cruisers decide to travel in a rally.
Let’s go check the anchor.
However, no shirts and no shoes are encouraged.
Lowe was just about to run off the end of that dock when the water taxi pulled up. That’s a look of disappointment on his face.
This dock made up for that, times ten.
The kids are thrilled with the beach we’ve got here across from the boat. There’s jungle to explore, shade, clear water, and no people.

Interesting. The price of Salva Vida there at that bar (1.60 or so) is the same as at Spec’s liquor stores in Texas ($9.67 per six pack.)
There is a reason Utila has the reputation as the budget destination. Prices more than doubled in the 22 miles between there and Roatan.
Nothing makes me feel older than watching kids without their fear response fully formed …I used to run around on the roof of a split level house chasing my brother, now I am afraid of getting up on my single story ranches roof….though I still like going to the top of my 52 ft mast..
Thanks Pat and Ali for letting us into your life!
Kids are amazing. It took Lowe about 10 minutes longer to take his first jump, none of us said anything to him, and when he was ready he just did it without tell us he was going. Then he was non-stop. I have the fear in me now, just don’t want to get hurt for a stupid reason. Pat does not.
Hi Pat.
When do you plan to offer your boat? 🙂
cheers
Carsten
I’m sure we could come up with a price if you were serious, Carsten. 😉
Love the pictures of the kids jumping off the dock. Especially the one of Lowe. It looks like hes just standing g there in the air. Great shots loved looking at all the pictures
Thanks, Pamela. I guess adults jump that thing at dark and after many drinks. I like the daytime better.
Great post, as always.
The picture of jumping off the dock reminded me of my adventures jumping from that height as a kid about Lowe’s age. My takeaway from that experience was keep the legs closed. Ouch.
Ha. Oops. At least a lesson was learned and you still remember it. 🙂
