Mismaloya

We spent this weekend trotting all over the Puerto Vallarta area. Saturday morning started with breakfast in Bucerias, followed by a walk around La Cruz and the marina there, and ended with the afternoon spent in Punta Mita.

La Cruz Punta Mita

Sunday we drove south to Mismaloya. Ali and I always enjoy this little bay. The kids do to, though this is the first time they actually remember.

Mismaloya is split by a river that mostly closes up at low tide. On one side of the river is a big hotel that’s mostly shut in on itself. On the other side is a row of beachfront palapa restaurants whose kitchens it is important to studiously avoid looking into, yet somehow they’ve been here forever, and we’ve always spent our days under them eating and drinking until our heart’s content. The service is always incredible and the crowd always in a festive mood.

Years and years ago there was a baby pelican with one wing that the restaurant owners kind of took in, kept fed, and shooed the dogs away from. That pelican is still swimming around, and a bunch of his friends have begun to think his life looks pretty good, too, so they’ve all moved in.

Dogs come and go, digging out a hole under any random table for a cool nap spot. Meanwhile, sleepy pelicans attempt to find an empty chair to get comfortable on.

Tacos at Pepe’s on the way home. Not as good as I remembered. Ali never cared for them there to begin with, so she won the “I told you so” award for the day.

When the air-conditioning didn’t seem to be working very well, I went investigating. What I found was… disgusting.

That’s the seawater filter, used for drawing in water to circulate through the air-conditioner and keep it cool. Weird it wasn’t working so good.

Heat gun got the stickers off easy enough. But geez, nothing is working on the sticky film left behind—not acetone, not goo gone, not wax.

Sunny and smoking hot all day, until five minutes before you walk up to make dinner on the BBQ. That’s Puerto Vallarta in September. This marina is part of a resort, which means we get use of all the resort amenities as well. One of those is a BBQ with palapa overlooking the entrance channel. It can be reserved in two-hour increments by asking the hotel concierge. It’s beginning to get a little awkward walking in there every other day to request it, but they never bat an eyelash. I doubt they are used to such frequent guest use. The great thing isn’t the BBQ itself, it’s that when you arrive the grill is spotless, and you never have to clean it.

  1. Try charcoal lighter fluid on the glue. Worked on Corvette race cars with no damage for years.

  2. I’d try good old olive oil on the sticker goo. If that doesn’t work go to lighter fluid, the kind for zippos. That’s what the hubby used on his sprint cars.

  3. Try Avon’s Skin So Soft. It works on a lot of adhesives. We always enjoyed Mismaloya. It has really changed over the years. First time we were there was about 1969 with our 3 year old. Traveling at that time in a 1962 Mercedes Sedan. Several mechanical problems along the way. Our little blonde child was a delightful novelty for the natives when we stopped for repairs. She was treated like royalty.

  4. From one wander to another what do you guys do for teaching curriculum? For us and our 10 year old daughter, it’s the most confusing and complicated problems were faced with. Especially as the subjects are becoming more advanced and complicated. It really shines a light on how much I’ve forgotten.
Do you guys have any advice on schooling in the outback or resources that have been helpful?
Thanks a ton for blogging your adventures and showing how possible it is to adventure with a family.

  5. We’ve sailed and lived in Central America and had kids there and then moved back in the USA and still travel. I use to check in on your blog from time to time but it’s been years. Your “what you can buy my kid as a present” section is a nice elitist touch. Times have changed I guess.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to establish yourself as a good person before the random insult. In the future, though, you might want to consider waiting a day before hitting send. I find that one simple step makes all of us better people. Also, those links don’t buy presents for our kids, they are for others to use for themselves.
