This is the Municipal Market located just two blocks down the street from us. We’re in there daily for fruit, tamales, horchata, ice cream, or just as a short-cut on our way back from the taco or gordita stands. The building is 114 years old—and I’d be willing to bet there are dark corners in there that haven’t seen a mop in that long—but of all the markets we’ve been to around the world this one ranks right up there as one of our favorites.

Love that market, can’t wait to return!
you said horchata. (missing Mexico! maybe we’ll manage to get the rest of the way around the world and back there eventually, but we can’t seem to move at the pace you two had on your circ…)
That’s because you have kids. Hell, we can’t even get out of Mexico now. 🙂
I just got caught up to date with your blog. I’ve been reading it for the last three weeks and have talked about you guys for a while now. I found you guys through The Rebel Heart and their story in San Diego Magazine a little while ago. My wife first thought I was weird, like talking about you guys like I knew you. Then my “sudden” desire about sailing and adventure. Truth is, I’ve always been the adventurous type and a love for the ocean since I can remember. I’m very happy that you like Mazatlan. Your first visits were short and I felt you didn’t give the city a chance. My family is from Mazatlan. Your picture of the Carneceria at the market has my same last name, Lizarraga. I’m sure you’ve noticed that name around Sinaloa. It’s almost as common as Smith is here in the states. I live in San Diego, but my parents and my wife’s parents both have houses in Mazatlan, in the colonia Sabalo Country. That’s in front of the Pueblo Bonito Hotel on the way to the Marina. If you ever need a dentist, my aunt, Rosa Isela Lizarraga, lives and has her practice near the mermaid statue on the malecon. I also have a cousin, Gilberto Lizarraga, who is an accountant, talks a little English and can help you too. My wife and I plan to be in Mazatlan before Thanksgiving, so if you guys are still around, I’d love to say hi. I love your blog and your lifestyle.
Ha…Behan misses Mexico too! Mazatlan is awesome…that market was the best, best fruits and vegies, best fresh cut beef, best fresh shrimp, best fresh caught fish…everything was awesome. We will return!
Yay, mercado photos! What is the brightly colored shredded looking stuff in 2 photos? I’m intrigued.
Different sweet flavored coconut.
I visited that mercado one day after watching a bull fight. All the bull heads were on display and beef was on sale. Quite an eye-opener.
