Luckenbach

I got a new brake light switch, installed it, and still have no brake lights. Crap. I’ve bypassed the switch and confirmed that the wiring is fine, which really only leaves the possibility that the switches are junk. Which, considering they only cost nine bucks, wouldn’t surprise me in the least. Problem is, it always takes a day or two for NAPA to get one in for me, which means we have to plan ahead a little. Which, for us, is almost impossible. For now I’m going to run the wiring back into the bus and install a simple toggle switch so I can flip the brake lights on whenever I want.

We rolled through Luckenbach, Texas, nearly five years ago in the VW bus. Pre-kids, and as I recall we had too much to drink. Today was a more family friendly imbibing experience, but every bit as enjoyable. I love this place. If we were to settle down somewhere I would wish for a place exactly like this to be just down the road. Sitting outside, listening to live music, drinking cold beer on a warm spring day, under the big oak tree shading everything between the bar and the stage—well, to me that’s just about perfect.

The kids enjoyed it too. There was a bridge for them to run across and trees for them to climb. Not to mention funnel cakes. Luckenbach is a wonderland. Waylon and Willie and the boys had it right.

  1. I could think of a million great captions for the photo of Ali and the big knife. Hilarious! Love Luckenbach too! Great kickback place.

  2. Let’s go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys

Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain.

  3. Stuff to do in the area Texas BBQ, World War 2 museum in Fredricksburg and LBJ Homestead, ranch and tour,

  4. Marfa Texas is one of my favorite towns. It’s south of you and towards Big Bend National Park. Off the beaten path but home to me!

  5. If you’re still heading west, there is a very kid-friendly balloon festival in Roswell this weekend. We went last year. They had about 60 balloons and you could walk around right on the field where they were taking off. The RV parks in Roswell aren’t the greatest but there is a really nice state park about 15 miles away-$14 a night for water and electric.

We started fulltiming last year and you are almost retracing our route from our first few months. We went to Kemah, Galveston, Shiner/Gonzales and Luckenbach then on to New Mexico. (We skipped San Antonio.) I’ve been reading since your van days and I’m loving this stage of your adventure.

  6. After a couple weeks of reading, I have now caught up with the last 10+ years of your lives. It was like reading a novel and I have enjoyed every second of it. I can’t wait to hear what happens next!!

  7. My all time favourite pic of yours.. That pic could be right out of a horror movie (thinking Hills Have Eyes type).. Ya honey, I’ll be out in a minute to skin em (*spit tobacco juice*)

    1. Except I bypassed it by plugging the two wire connectors together through a toggle switch now. The connectors are sound. And the lights work great when that switch is bypassed, so ground isn’t it either.

      1. Pat,
Looking at the switch: https://www.bumfuzzle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Mar11-3.jpg, there should have been a small loss of brake fluid when you removed the old switch and you would have had to bleed the brakes. If not, the problem may be that the master cylinder is full of muck/junk and there is no pressure going to the switch when you hit the brake pedal. If so, try hitting the brakes with the switch off and see if whatever is blocking the hole gets blasted out. HTH.

  8. this successful life we’re livin…. i’m early 40’s but the tune still reverberates in my head from time to time. Cool.

  9. Pat. Dont forget Willies July4th picnic. there is usually a warmup concert the day before at Willies Place (used to be called “Carls Corner” Plenty of parking in the field over the road and lotsa RVers staying over the night when I was there… There is so much neat stuff to see y’all will still be in the area I reckon.

Man you guys are so lucky to be just passin through and around Texas, it cost me $13K just to fly over and git a taste of it ….. there is some real spectacular scenery there for sure. Going back is high on the bucket list.

    1. There’s more than plenty to do, but with kiddos and no A/C on this rig, it seems one can find more pleasantly cool things to do by that time of year. But then, I am a noobie here and don’t know just how transformative our hosts’ South American sojourns may have been with regard to tolerating sticky nights.

A native Texan, I love my home. But July/August and the few weeks before and after a time I wish I was like a wealthy friend who lives in town: traveling in Europe somewhere.

  10. My UltraVan has one of those pressure switches for the brakes too. I hate that the lights don’t come on until the pressure comes up – it should come on as soon as I touch the pedal. I am going to switch to a mechanical switch I got at the parts store (like this: http://amzn.com/B004BTMKKO ), I just need to come up with a bracket to hold the switch against the leg of the pedal.

  11. If you guys have the time, Wimberly, TX and the Blue Hole areas are amazing spots to check out. Mark has family in the area and we get down there at least once a year. It really is gorgeous. It’s been fun following your travels via wheels!
