Lonely Isla

Ali had to head to Minnesota for a few days. Which left the three of us completely confused. No mama? No Ali?

After the first night Ouest asked, “How many nights has Mama been gone now?”

We spent a couple days bouncing around the island a bit. The water on the outside of the island is fantastic. We anchored in 7 feet and the kids spent the day diving down collecting treasures off the bottom and playing all their normal games. Unfortunately, the swell out there never seems to quit, so we had to anchor back on the inside of the bay for the night.

What happens when feeding the kids is left to me? How about nachos for dinner. Chips, beans, and cheese—that’s it, and you’re going to like it. Worse than the dinner itself was the fact that I somehow touched the scorching tray to the inside of my bicep—don’t ask me how, I don’t know—and left a sizzling burn. Ask me to do anything on a boat, just don’t ask for food.

Yet another sailboat being towed in to the harbor. This one came in with a busted up jib furler and a main lying on the boat like they’d just barely survived the worst night at sea ever. Wind was 15 knots. I’ve seriously never seen so many busted down sailboats in my life. I swear only half of them seem to have working engines by the time they get here from wherever it is they’re coming from.

Meanwhile, the view in Minnesota. I honestly don’t miss that white stuff for even one second.

Some seagulls have the biggest claws.

We had a nice time during Ali’s absence, but we were all super happy when she got home. And hungry. And a little dirty. And at least one adult was starved for some conversation that didn’t include answering, “Can I have something to eat?”

Ali was chopping the onions. Between the two of them they whip up an amazing pico de gallo.

  1. Hey Bums,
It’s been so long since I checked up on you. Glad you’re still chasing the dream. I tell everyone I know with a sailboat about the “Bums”. Ya need to put more on YouTube, I’ve subscribed. I’ve been in Phuket Thailand for a few years now.

  2. For years I have been saying that when I grow up I want to be a “Bum Kiddo”. Maybe someday.

    1. This is about her third cycle reading them. She will read a new book in between but hasn’t got hooked on anything but Wimpy Kid. She’s mad at Jeff Kinney for not write more quicker. 🙂

  3. I know exactly what you mean. When Cindy was off the boat visiting family in the USA, I was by myself for a couple of weeks. It is a whole different experience. We spend most of our days less than 15 feet apart. When one is gone it takes some getting used to.

What the heck is that comming out of the can of re-fried beans?

    1. I left Pat with not many choices onboard, I thought they would just eat tacos out while I was away. And “most kids” are not our kids – no Chef Boyardee or Kraft Mac & Cheese – from what Pat and I used to consume pre-kids – our kids are about fresh fruit, cut veggies, and mainly homemade meals. Lowe does consume his share of sweet dry cereal though.

    1. We haven’t looked and won’t stop in. We’ve learned from too many bad ones, when in Mexico, stick with tacos. When in big cities with Chinatowns with many local Chinese we definitely go. The best.

  4. Aww, you had a stick of gum yesterday!!! ha if you keep feeding them they will grow…my nephew is proof positive you can raise a kid on box cereal! dbl ha no worries, moms know they are needed when coming back from away…goodonyas

  5. Has Ouest discoverd any of Kate Milford’s books? A friend’s 12 year old grand daughter loved “Green Glass House” and so did all of us adults. There are about 4 in the series and involve sailing, priates, friendly ghosts, very good adventures.

    1. Hi Carol, thanks for the recommendation. I’ve added them to our cart for a future order – they sound good but a bit old for Ouest at the moment. If anything a good night time family read before bed. Thanks!

    1. Ding ding ding, we have a winner. Took longer than I expected, four days, before someone thought I really didn’t know the bird with the huge claws was an osprey. 🙂

  6. Hi, do you guys support LQGBTV people? Because I don’t see us represented on your blog. I love your content but I just want to see people like us treated as equals in the cis boating community.
