Lizard Island

It was a short sail up to Lizard Island, a place Ali and I had been 19 years earlier, to the day. Unfortunately, she was back in the States helping Grammy, instead of slogging up the hill with me again.

Spot the cuttlefish, because I sure didn’t. Only saw it after a friend pointed it out.

Little more obvious as it starts to float off. We learned a lot of interesting things when we looked these up on Wikipedia. They have a distinctive W shaped eye that you can see in this picture. They release a brownish ink that is the source of the word sepia. And they also have the cuttlebone, which we’ve been finding all over the beaches, and kept thinking looked exactly like the things we used to put in our pet bird cages for them to sharpen their beaks on. Turns out that’s exactly what they are. Cool creatures.

It was nice to be back in the water again, but man was it cold. I went so far as to break out the 3mm full body wetsuit for this. I know it’s winter here in Australia, but this is a little ridiculous.

Definitely not the same without Ali, but we were all grateful to have friends here with us. The kids would have surely tired of my company alone.
