KL

On our way back to the boat in Langkawi we stopped off in Kuala Lumpur for a couple of days. Ali and I had been to KL before, and really didn’t think a whole lot of it, but flights made it cheaper to go this route, so we figured we’d give it another shot. In the end, we rather liked the place. We had just two days to play tourist, so we headed straight out the hotel doors and took a left, aiming for the KL Tower.

From the top of KL Tower we had sweeping views of KL and its other towers, including the not very catchily named Merdaka 118. Merdaka = Independent, and 118 = 118 floors. A fittingly boring name for a 2nd place finisher, I suppose. It’s a beautiful building and looked very cool, but it’s hard to take the world’s second tallest building very seriously with a needle like that on top.

The Petronas Towers nearby. KL really is a rather remarkable city, and just like with almost any country, really highlights how different one area of a country can be from another area. KL must seem utterly foreign to much of the Malaysian population out in the countryside, and vice versa.

Only two of us went out to the glass bottom to see if we could give ourselves a little vertigo. We couldn’t, but it was fun anyway.

We’d done a lot of city walking, museum browsing, and restaurant tasting, and it was time to give the kids something different. So, off to the mall for an indoor skydive. We had a good time, but agreed it’s not something we’d bother doing again. Next time we feel wind like that it’ll be out the side door of an airplane.

And hey, how about a quick trip to the Batu Caves as long as we have a few more hours before our flight?

The Hindu temples inside the caves date from the 1890s and really make it a unique place.

The Petronas Towers all lit up red for the New Year. Last stop before getting back to the boat in Langkawi.
