Looking at the map one day I spotted in little red letters, Kite Museum. That sounded good enough to make it a destination for the kids. We happened to have internet that night so I looked it up and the website said that they hosted a big international kite festival every year. I wondered when that might be, so I clicked around and discovered that it started in two days. Perfect.
Before leaving Westport we strolled along the waterfront. Large sea lions crowded one dock, some barking loudly while others tried to sleep. One of the local fishermen warned us that the sea lions like to grab things off the dock—most notably small dogs—so be careful. That helped keep the kids by our side.
Just down the road in Grayland the beach is actually an official state highway. Somewhat tentatively we ventured out there in the fog for a drive. Lowe took the wheel, driving on the highway for the first time, and somehow keeping us from getting stuck.
The kite festival took place in Long Beach, where apparently they lay claim to the World’s Longest Beach. That claim seems a little dubious. But whatever, all small towns claim to be something—who is going to bother disputing them.
Ouest was excited by the prospect of building her own kite, something she does regularly with paper and sticks. Today she got to use sticks and plastic. Yippee. We had a fun day on the beach—really just like any other day at the beach for us except for one thing, all those big colorful kites flying overhead. The town wasn’t half bad either. Definitely a tourist town, but with a good vibe. Lots of restaurants and candy shops. Fish, chips, and saltwater taffy.

You’re doing our month of July in exact reverse. If you’re still in the area Marsh’s Free Museum is a quirky treat. That’s where the Alligator Man actually lives as well as 50 or so other off-beat attractions.

Some great photos in this set. I see Lowe has learned how to discreetly step off into the weeds to go potty!
Nothing quite like flying a kite on the beach–fun and colorful with so many! Enjoyed the sea lion pics. Now those sea lions many help take care of the noise problem from a certain generation of RVers!
Some really good photos with the fog.
Ali has the most beautiful hair…. mermaid hair lol
How is Lowe’s four-wheel-driving skills at the ripe old age of 3? 😀
Love the Tank Girl kite!
I’ve got some catching up to do! Last time I checked in you were somewhere in Texas.
The last picture of Ali and the children under a sea of kites is both precious and priceless. Were any of the fishing trawlers for sale or just crab bait? 🙂
The second to last photo is one of my favorite EVER. And you take a lot of good ones. So beautiful of your little family and the colorful kites. Striking!
Those are some really great pictures. Hope you had a zoom lens on for those bad boys on the docks. They can be some mean hombres.
If you don’t my asking: how much of a stake did you start out with?
Were you a commodities trader in the pits?
