Jonesboro

We’ve spent a couple of nights at Craighead Forest Park in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In those two days I’ve lost count of how many friendly people welcomed us to Arkansas. The very first to do so was a behemoth of a man with a shaved head and a giant slug of tobacco in his lip. He was a Dodge man himself, and I’ll be damned if that didn’t make us brothers. He called Ouest, “Sweet Thing” and everyone else sir or ma’am. We were at a gas station/liquor store and I listened as he held the door to the beer cooler room for a woman and asked if there was anything he could help her get. He didn’t work there, he was just a customer. I realized then that we had entered The South.

The park here has at least three huge brand new playgrounds, a kids only fishing lake, and endless trails through the woods. Perfect fun for Lowe and Ouest, and a good place for all of us to rest for a couple of days. It’s still getting cold at night—near freezing—but we’re happy to bask in sixty degree days for now.

  1. Good to see what looks like your board tucked up on the roof racks Pat. Maybe time for a thruster for Ouest and Lowe when you get closer to the beach. Never too young to get salt water in the blood and no need to look for a calm anchorage. Maybe it’s time to take up kiting.

  2. Pat & Ali;

    I have spent many a mile pulling vintage race cars to many race tracks over the years in my Travco. My parents belonged to the Ho-Bo’s trailer group who traveled every weekend in the 1960&70s they and as I do now, use the cooking with the engine for meals on the road. Good eats less cleanup !! Here is a book “Manifold-Destiny-Guide-Cooking” I used it & my mom’s recipes. Now that I’m in no hurry to get where I’m going, I use more back & secondary roads to travel as you find many new & weird things off the main hiways !! Have a safe journey. Mike

  4. Hey guys! I haven’t checked in here in a while, so I was delighted to see your new, beautiful web site! Good work – it is beautiful! Not to mention the bus looks like the perfect new home for yet another grand road trip! Ryan and I will be renting and living on a motorboat in New York harbor this summer until we head back to our sailboat in the D.R. this autumn/winter. So if you find yourselves driving through New York, please look us up and send us a message – we’d love to buy you a drink in Liberty Landing Marina and offer up our free parking space! Good luck on your adventures with those adorable kids!

  5. Welcome to the South! At this time of the year keep a weather eye on the horizon. You’re in Tornado Alley and it’s about to be open season.

  6. I’m curious about your plans (hah!) Do you think you’ll stop somewhere for a month and pay monthly rates at a campground, or will it be a day at a time? Any plans to boondock without hookups?

    1. No, seriously doubt we’ll be staying anywhere in the States for an entire month. And yes, of course we’ll be boondocking. Remember we’ve only had running water for a day, and our solar panels are still in cardboard boxes on the roof. Give us time to get settled. 🙂
