Injection

We got back to work on the engine this morning and before long it was time for the big moment.

Shortly after this video was taken the mechanic realized that one of the fuel injectors was leaking. We removed it for a closer look and discovered that a metal ring that sits behind the “nipple” had disintegrated. The rings purpose was to press the nipple in to the valve nice and tight, and without it that wasn’t happening. So actually in the video the engine was running on just three cylinders.

These are pretty unique parts and the thought that we may have to order a new one bummed me out big time. Omar said, “Come on man, this is Mexico, give me a hammer and nails and I could make this thing run.”

And so it was. He took the part to a welding shop, had a little brainstorming session, and hit upon the idea of wrapping a couple of lock washers around it and then giving them a quick shot with the welder.

Omar returned with half an hour left until he would get kicked out of the work yard (marina rules). We reinstalled the injector and…

Success.

My new alternator wasn’t working though. And the steering assembly was still leaking like a sieve despite my every effort. I was out of ideas so Omar said he’d take it home and have a look. I removed it for the tenth time and ran it out to him where he waited in the parking lot.

There is still a ton to do before the boat goes in the water at eight a.m. On top of that I’ve only got a slip until 8 a.m. the next morning. That’s how busy the marina is right now.

I don’t have any idea how everything is going to come together, but at least the engine is running.

  1. Awesome video of a pro bleeding fuel injectors :-).
Keeping fingers (and toes) crossed for the big day!

    1. Yep. Was a pretty smooth startup considering all the work. Takes me longer to get started after changing a fuel filter.

    1. Sorry. Since this is a highly technical blog all about engine maintenance, the part is in fact an “Injection Pipe” used to supply the fuel to the fuel injector. Sorry if I caused any confusion to my mother this morning. I hope she didn’t spill her coffee over my gaffe.

      1. Oh my goodness! Thanks for the hearty chuckle this morning! Love your sarcastic wit! Makes my day! Hope your mom didn’t burn herself too badly with the hot coffee! 😉

      2. “Injection Pipe”!! Now I’ve ordered the wrong part! I’d call the shop but it looks like someone spilled coffee all over my papers.

Good luck Pat I hope to hear her purring like a kitten soon.

        John
