Seven years ago I started Wanderer Financial. After years of being asked how I afford the lifestyle we live, I decided to show people.

Since we took off sailing in 2003 I’ve acquired a lot of new skills. After all this time spent fixing boats and motorhomes in order to keep them, and my family, moving forward, it was inevitable that I’d learn a few new tricks. But the only skill I’ve ever possessed that I could use to make money was trading and investing. My skill is making money make more money. Do I wish I could make a living as an artist, create beautiful things with my hands, or strum a guitar and have a crowded bar sing my songs back to me? Yes, I do. Hell, Ali still wishes I was a veterinarian. But, hey, if I had any of those skills then I’d probably be wondering why I was always broke, and wishing that I understood finance better. It turns out that being expert at understanding economics, the financial markets, and the myriad ways to profit from them is probably a better way to keep a boat sailing around the world than playing catchy tunes in beach bars.

One thing I’m truly terrible at, though, is marketing. I’m the worst. I once hired a marketer, and in each call we had together I could see new patches of her scalp where she had pulled out fists full of hair from our discussions. “How do you have a strong business, run it for all these years from a boat, and never tell anyone about it!”

Fair point. I imagine a good chunk of you reading this haven’t even thought about what I do to gather up the almighty dollars. Well, instead of singing catchy tunes or making silly videos to keep you glued to your screen every waking minute of the day, I study world economies, analyze charts, trade stocks, trade options, and generally do everything I can to buy things low and sell them high. And, I also run Wanderer Financial, where I share what I do with my fellow Wanderers.

So here’s my simple holiday marketing pitch: sign up for our free email list and you’ll get access to a ton of blog posts and videos, a stock to watch email each week, and a bunch of other stuff. Additionally, on New Year’s Day we’re going to pick one random person off that list to get a FREE SUBSCRIPTION to Wanderer for a year (a $799 value).

Our Wanderer subscribers get a Weekly Market Outlook Newsletter where we discuss what’s driving the market, what we see happening in the weeks ahead, and how we’re going to approach capitalizing on it. They get access to a constantly updating Wanderer on Watch page where we post trade setups as they happen. And perhaps best of all, they join us in Basecamp, our daily live chat where we Wanderers hang out, talk about the market, talk about our travels, ask questions, and just generally have a really good time with like-minded people, while at the same time we work on making money. It’s seriously one of the best corners of the internet, full of really awesome people that have almost all come to us organically through Bumfuzzle through the years (despite my horrendous marketing skills).

Anyway, that’s my long-winded spiel for 2023. Sign up for Wanderer’s email list today and you’ll get access to a bunch of great investing information as well as be entered for a chance to win a FREE WANDERER SUBSCRIPTION and get your 2024 started off on the right foot.

The Goonies in front of Haystack Rock.

We’ve spent quite a bit of time having fun on Oregon’s beaches through the years, and this November trip has to rank as one of the best.

Ecola State Park, Clatsop Loop Trail. With weather like this we had to get out and stretch the legs a bit more. We really enjoyed this hike.

One last bonfire before we go.

We woke up in Cannon Beach one morning, packed our bags, drove Grammy home, said our goodbyes, and a few hours later we were unpacking our bags in icy Minnesota.

Kudos to Ali, whose mom recently entered this photo that she took (last time we were here) into a local contest. Ali took top prize and the hundred bucks that came with it. Probably not going to repeat that color at this time of year.

  1. WOW! Nice photo Ali! What a bunch of talented people you all are. Happy Holiday Season to you and your family.

  2. Hi Pat – would a newly turned 18 year-old who is loving his AP Econ class and just opened a Robin Hood account get any benefit from your Wanderer Financial group?

    1. Yes. I don’t use my subscription nearly as I could or should, but it turns a profit every year and is full of insightful information.

  3. I love the fact that you did not just do a “drive by” visit with your mom, but stayed several days and made arrangements to include her and do something fun with her (and incuded the dog!). She looks so happy. I just lost my 97 year old father and I’m so grateful for every moment I got with him. You won’t regret a second. These photos really touched my heart. Congrats to Ali for a spectacular photo. And I love the pic of the deer, no matter which one of you took it. I wish I could share the pics of the wild turkeys in my driveway. I look forward to hearing your adventures in Minnesota.

    1. It’s definitely more work these days, but is so worth the effort. We had a great time and made some memories.

Sorry for your loss. I’m sure he’d repeat the same sentiments about being grateful for every moment with you.

Feel free to share pics with us anytime! Just send us an email.

  4. Well Pat let me fully concur. You suck at marketing 😉 but are straight up awesome at teaching investing.

    My pitch for Wander Financial:
The main thing I have learned there, and it is in my opinion the most important thing, is how to protect your down side and not chase losers. I have made orders of magnitude more on trading since joining WF than I have paid in dues. I can’t recommend it more highly. As a regular on basecamp it really is more about picking which trades to follow with all of the smart people posting set ups they have discovered. I have learned how to pull valuable information from charts, trade options intelligently, and use stops to free me from being locked in front of my brokerage account all day. You also have the added benefit of asking questions (which may feel stupid or basic but we all have them) of seasoned traders like Lorin and Pat (and us basecampers!) without feeling like you are going to get mocked or dunked on. It is a wonderful community and as I am retiring this year and starting my full time wandering, it is an integral part of my plan.

  5. Hey, Pat I tried to sign up for the free trial option. The page would not accept the sign up. And, yes, I went to Mail Chimp to make cookie choices before pressing the “subscribe” button. Just though you should know.

  6. These pictures are great. I’ve never spent much time in the PNW and feel like I’m there. Hard to believe you get those beaches AND those forests so close to each other.

I have a very poor money mindset. What you do for a living amazes me. The fact that you take time to teach it to other people for such a low fee is even more impressive.

  7. Wonderful post. Brings back memories of when we lived in Vancouver, WA, across the Columbia River from Portland. Such a beautiful part of the country. We spent a week in Depot Bay in a place sitting on top of a cliff overlooking the Pacific. The sound of the pounding waves against the cliff was so relaxing.

+1 for Wanderer Financial, Pat. Without it I would still be slogging away at some job, tied to a desk all day (and most evenings). Instead, I’m happily retired and living life on my terms now.
