Well Ouest did it, she made it through her first week of school. To be honest, I gave this little experiment about a fifty/fifty shot of surviving a week. I figured if she didn’t like it and cried to us that she didn’t want to go back that there would be little arguing on our part. Force a three-year-old to go to school? Not us. Throwing all that money down the drain would have sucked, but sometimes that’s just what you do with kids, right? How many parents have bought a trombone for eight hours of lessons?
But she didn’t complain, and every day she seemed happier than the last. When I picked her up today the whole class had just come down the stairs and were making their way to the door. The girls were all light as feathers, bouncing across the courtyard. They all said adios to each other in squealing fun voices, took each others hands, laughed, and smiled. Ouest was a part of that. She wasn’t quite as loose as the other girls, but she was enjoying the camaraderie as much as any of them. It made me happy to see her happy. I really couldn’t be more proud of her for what she accomplished in these first four days of school.
This morning Lowe and I went to the beach twelve blocks or so up the street from us. It’s just a small cove and the waves were breaking heavy on one end, but the other was protected by some offshore rocks and was just a little sloppy, not dangerous. Good enough for swimming finally.
When we arrived there was a guy sweeping the entire beach clean, and there was even a lifeguard hanging around. Only a handful of people were on the beach, but a dozen or so surfers and boogie boarders were out on the point off the rocks getting nice waves. We walked into the water together and right away something spooked Lowe and he wanted back out. We walked back up on shore, but ten seconds later he wanted to go back in. This time I could hardly get him to come out of the water. We splashed around for an hour, swimming underwater together and practicing his kicking and paddling. He still hasn’t quite reached the point of being able to keep himself above water, but he definitely has the motion down. I suppose he’ll be treading soon enough. One thing is for sure—the boy loves the water.
I don’t do the whole “pics of food” thing very often, but this is probably my favorite taco of all time and deserves it. That there is a California pepper, shrimp, cheese, tartar sauce, and three-peppers sauce. I get these every time we’re in Mazatlan and always wish for more.

Yay Ouest!!!!
That fruit vendor could be a movie star. I might send his pic to someone in Hollywood – if I could figure out who.
Do you know what are ingredients of three peppers sauce?
The fact that there is more than one pepper (black) is news to me already. Sorry.
Way to go, Ouest and Lowe!!!! You are both chips of the old block 🙂
Old Dolf Lundgren sells beach fruit!
Yeah, I see it. Dolf all slimmed down as men of a certain age tend to do. Guys arms were like steel cables too. 🙂
So glad to hear Ouest is digging school!
Every day it is always a treat to open your blog and read of the day’s activities and adventures. Ousts and Lowe are really striving in your lifestyle choices, and how cool that Ouest is off to school at 3yo. As always, photos just enhance your stories, and I’d buy fruit from that handsome vendor any day! (I agree with the earlier comment…contact central casting!)
The taco looks amazing. I think you have a little brainiac on your hands. She is so cute!
Favorite taco ever is a pretty serious statement…I’ll take your word for it.
All right, maybe I was still on a taco high when I wrote that. Instead let’s say it’s the best shrimp taco ever. 🙂
