Feliz Dia de la Madre

Mother's Day

Under normal circumstances we are prone to completely forget, or flat out ignore, Hallmark holidays. But because Ali has cooked roughly one million meals in a row, it was a happy surprise that the marina restaurant was opening up to serve a Mother’s Day takeaway feast and she could get at least a one meal break.

The lockdown has meant more time for work. Whether that is good or bad is debatable, but Ouest’s Spanish has definitely benefited.

Ali and I start each morning with coffee on the top deck. This has been our view for the last ten weeks or so. It’s nice, but we’re ready for a new horizon.

There’s been a cartoon person drawing style development this past week. Ali and Ouest have some sort of daily art competition going. We’re a notoriously ungifted art family, so any time Ouest gets interested in drawing we’re surprised by it.

Ali was digging around in one of the hidden compartments under the bed the other day and pulled out a box with these screens in them. She knew they were there, but thought that they were for our front hatch, which currently has a rather crappy screen on it. She pulled these out hoping one of them would replace it, but then discovered neither of them fit. It took us a few minutes to put two and two together and realize they were for this back door. Not sure when we would ever need them, but they’re kind of cool.

These two spend a lot of time in this sling thing, bouncing around, spinning, and sweating. We have to tell them to get out now and then because we can see they are about to pass out from the heat. Have I mentioned how grateful we are that they have each other? Yeah, I could repeat that every single day.

We’ll get word from Puerto Rico government in the next couple of days if things are opening up. We’ve been hesitant to make any plans to move from our current spot because up until now if we left we wouldn’t be able to return. As hurricane season is coming up, we don’t want to risk finding ourselves without a good spot to stay. And actually, as I write this, we now know that restrictions have been lifted. So we’re making plans to still try and make the most of this cruising season before the Atlantic hurricanes lock us down.

  1. My daughter in Louisiana told me this year is supposed to be particularly bad, with about 19 storms lined up. Of course, not all of them make it all the way across the Atlantic, but still…stay safe!

    1. Thanks, Rebecca, we have been watching the forecast. We are taking a risk staying in Puerto Rico, but an educated risk.

  2. I love seeing all the pictures, especially the feet coming out of the hammock!
How wonderful they have each other☺.They will grow old having the most
Incredible memories and they’ll be forever grateful for having parents like you!
Hope you get started on a new adventure soon. Lots of ???

    1. #2 wasn’t planned, but man we cannot imagine it any other way. They take such good care of each other – imagine what it will be like when they are older…

  3. Don’t get too excited that you forget to make sure your next port of call is open, and that coronavirus
is not bad there, before beginning the next journey.
    Take care. John

    1. haha. At this point there isn’t a cruiser that can’t list, off the top of their head, the case counts, and quarantine rules for every country in the Caribbean. It’s all we talk about.

    1. The “current” plan is to keep the boat in Salinas for hurricane season. Right now we are enjoying the USVIs for June before things pipe up for the season. We will tour PR, stay in Old San Juan for a bit, surf, but be ready to move the boat should something pop up.

  4. I’ve always thought how much your kids remind me of my brother and I. We traveled CONSTANTLY growing up – okay, not as much as you, but the in that territory 🙂
He was the biggest gift of my life

    1. Yes reading your posts about Dana, got me all chocked up inside. Sounds like you were each other. It must be hard not having him part of your life and the kids too. You did good going to Hawaii – just saying. Much love amiga.

  5. If you need to leave the hurricane zone you could start the Great Loop. That would seem like a Bumfuzzle adventure.

    1. Yes thought about it – but with the virus rising daily in the U.S., many things closed (restaurants, marinas, museums, venues, national parks) it seems like it wouldn’t be the “real” experience we would be looking for. Plus an election year – no thank you. And now with the hate going on. Nope – we are good out here.
