February Blur

Davis Sunset

Davis Park along the Colorado River. Beaches, palms, and decidedly non-tropical waters.

Silly us, we thought we’d walk up to the dam and take a look.

We didn’t have any immediate travel plans from Laughlin, but we had an absolute ton on our plate with regards to other things, mainly J.O.B. related stuff. We decided the best way to get everything done was to just hunker down for a couple of weeks, nose to the grindstone, and get it done without worrying about where we were going to stay, or running out to get groceries every couple of days, or if we would have good enough internet to accomplish what needed doing, so Ali searched around and found this strange place out in the desert. Perfect. A place where we could get caught up on work, and also get some more things done around the bus, indoors. It was actually a really nice new home on the inside, too.

One of those bus projects was fixing an electrical issue. All the power to one side of the bus had gone out. Getting at it all required tearing apart the majority of the kitchen. Frustrating, and time consuming. I eventually gave up on fixing the current wiring and opted to just run a new wire from the breaker box on one side of the bus to the other, which is harder than it sounds. But hey, eventually it was done, and everything was put back together, and we were right back where we had been just a week earlier. I hate wasting time on something like this when there are so many other things to do, but it’s pretty hard to live with a kitchen without power.

Here was a happy discovery. Cylinder #3 had been causing me problems, but when I pulled the plug this time, after a couple hundred miles that included some hard climbing, it still looked new.

I hate to say that our life has been boring in February, but by our standards this has definitely been the most sedentary (i.e. boring to us) we have been in a long time. We have hardly touched a camera in weeks.

The Mohave Raceway was a fun diversion, though. We had a blast watching the races, and by the end were already planning to come back for the night races the next weekend.

We have decided that we’re not too keen on the idea of RVing in the States in the summer. I know that’s sort of what most RV people are looking forward to doing, but it just doesn’t sound all that appealing to us right now. And we’re all sort of missing the boat life again, which was one of the reasons we decided to buy an inexpensive motorhome in the first place. Traveling around this way recharges our batteries for the boat lifestyle, and then we can easily park the bus and leave it for next time.

Turns out our next destination for the boat also has a rather small weather window each year. A window that should start opening up soon.

So, in addition to all the other work we needed to get done this month, we tacked on preparations for departure.

My birthmother happened to be in Phoenix for just a few days visiting her sister, and she was nice enough to make the effort to drive all the way up to visit us.

And that’s it. February passed in a blur. March should be more fun.

  1. A boring blurry month for the Bums? Definitely time to get back on the boat-I’ve missed your photos of the beautiful blue water! Good decision to skip RV’ing here in the summertime. Last summer we spent hours on the phone trying to line up campings, which had been booked months ahead. Put a damper on our spontaneous travel mode for sure. With RV sales up 70% last year, no wonder campings are full way in advance….
Hope you enjoy a funtastic March!

  2. Don’t any evidence of ‘anti sieze’ on that plug. You might want to use it in the future.

  3. Apologies for nagging about the plug but it kind of looks a bit lean or advanced to me – I’d prefer to see some nice brown deposit on the centre insulator.

  4. Just rolled 2/24 from PHX through Havasu then north on 95 to ID. Was scanning the landscape for the Bluebird the whole way sensing you were near.

  5. Pat, I have been thinking that the bus was a middle age crazy for you. Now you have it under your belt and can move on. I do not think that once you park it you’ll never drive it again. Fun for a while, but lots of hard work. On to Aruba, warm water and new adventures for the Bum folks. Good luck and keep us posted. Robbie

    1. Whenever we get a comment that makes it sound like I’m leading my family around by a leash, I think I must not be doing a good job of conveying how our family makes decisions. I also think that I must not be doing a good job of conveying how much work a boat is.
