Yesterday morning I joked with Ouest, “Do you want me to pull that tooth out for you.”

“Shore,” she said, because apparently there really is nothing in this world that scares the girl.

“Okay, go get me a piece of toilet paper.”

She runs back in—apparently she only had one square to spare.

“You ready?”

She nods vigorously, and so I grab the tooth. But I wimp out and only give it a tiny tug. She doesn’t care, she’ll just wait.

Then last night she was busy brushing her teeth after her bath when she yelled out, “My tooth! My tooth fell out.” I turned to look at her and sure enough, there she was, holding her tooth in her hand and beaming.

That was it. Somehow I remember teeth falling out being a long drawn out process full of frightened tears. Not here. Maybe that’s the molars. Hell, she only mentioned the loose tooth the day before. Now she just spits it out into her hand like some kind of hockey player. Ridiculous. It’s like she doesn’t need her papa at all—Little Miss All-Grown-Up.

The tooth fairy made an appearance, dropping off a book and a quarter. I figured Ouest would wake up early, instead she slept until eight—about an hour later than normal. Not even magic flying fairies that can pass through walls with books in their hands can bother her.

It stopped raining this afternoon and I was able to start getting a couple of things in place. The panels are up top ready to be installed in a nice straight line down the middle. And I started figuring out the new air conditioner. The one I bought with the air and heat showed up with a 220 volt plug. Crap, we need 110. Had to return that. Stupid thing is that I did that exact same thing once before with a small air conditioner we bought for the boat.

  1. Oh my god – the playground photo of the two parents completely absorbed in their phones…I see that on a daily basis. You’ve captured a (negative) cultural evolution perfectly in one snap. I used to enjoy chatting with friends and neighbors when we went to the park or playground, but now at least two-thirds of them are head-down, tapping and swiping, not even noticing their kids, their surroundings or the joy of being “present” where they are.

  2. Yeah….the playground photo is the one the grabbed me too. You really captured something in that picture.

    Be well,

    Danno

  3. Just got back from DC, yeah, heads down and tapping away are most people. Hell, they even do it while driving.

    1. My favorite new hobby is laying on the horn when the person in the car next to me is tapping away on their phone. The startled reactions are priceless.

  4. I got something even better Pat my folks are 77 my mom and my pop 78 and I walked into there living room the last time I was there and they both are sitting in there recliners smart phones in there hands just tapping away you would have thought they were to 16 year olds it was just to funny

  5. Love that the tooth fairy brought Oeust a quarter. Apparently inflation hasn’t hit that commodity as that was what I received as a child — in the ’60s! Most of my friends had more generous fairies who left $1, even then. I wasn’t pleased. Love the photos of Oeust with her first tooth gone. She is certainly growing up.

    1. Well it hasn’t hit it in our family anyway. I think we’re a bit of an anomaly, though. I imagine by age six or seven the tooth fairy might have to do a little better, but at age four, she’s good with a quarter. On occasion we let her pick up the tab at the restaurant. She tells us, “I want to pay for dinner.” And we make a big show of saying okay. The bill comes, she lays three pennies on it and happily walks away. “Thank-you for dinner, Ouest! Man, it’s so nice not having to pay.”
