Double Grand Banks

This is the view from “our” mooring ball in Francis Bay, which has been one of our favorite spots in the USVIs. The turtles patrol the waters between us and shore, there are always birds hanging around fishing, and we’ve got our private beach spots that nobody else seems to hang out at.

Francis Bay

After a few more nights in Francis we moved around the corner to Waterlemon Cay, scotting between St. John, USVI on the right and a pile of British Virgin Islands on the left. They are still closed for COVID so we can’t explore there this season, and frankly, the way things are going I’m not sure they’ll be letting any of us Americans in next season either.

This bookworm has to be reminded to look up occasionally.

I’ve been talking about how disappointing the coral situation is in the USVIs (as everywhere in the Caribbean it seems), and people kept telling us to check out Waterlemon Cay. This was the view when we went over the side of the dinghy. Not exactly inspiring.

Eventually we found a few pockets of color and life, though, which brightened our mood.

Been seeing some squads of squid, which is kind of different. They tend to bolt off before I can get a shot of all of them.

Friends joined us for their last night in the USVIs. It’s been kind of cool to have two Grand Banks roaming around the island. We don’t see many trawlers despite our personal feelings that these are really the perfect boats for Caribbean cruising. No sails necessary in this relatively small (by our standards anyway) cruising ground.

  1. Seeing your little bookworm made me wonder if you’re familiar with the Jackie Faber book series?

She may still be a bit young for these reads but they are great fun (even for us adults!) & a wonderful way to learn some history too!
Always enjoy your photos & adventures, low key as they may be these days!
    Have fun!

      1. That is quite sad. Hopefully it will recover fully. The reefs in Puerto Rico when we were there in 2013 were also dead like that.

  2. A love of reading is one of the greatest gifts a parent can provide to their child. It costs little, but a parent’s time. Good job. Best wishes to Ouest as she explores new worlds. 🙂

    1. Yes, Amazon Kindle Unlimited has helped. Her favorite time is bedtime – as first Pat reads to them both (Harry Potter), then Lowe drifts off to sleep and she can stay up and read for another hour in bed. For a parent to say goodnight to your 8 and 10 year old at 8pm – it doesn’t get any better.
