Weekends in Bonaire have been all about getting off the boat and exploring the rest of the island, both land and sea. We’re really tallying up the underwater hours. This was a shore dive called Karpata. Little rough getting in and out, but we managed. After the dive Lowe said it was his second favorite dive ever behind the Northwind wreck dive in St. Croix. That’s pretty high praise. The place was loaded with beautiful coral, and the steep, deep, valleys were cool, too.
Kids. They can switch from studying a bit of coral intensely to goofing around with bubbles in an instant.
Across the street was this old plantation that looks to have been switched over to some sort of research station at some point before finally falling into disrepair. It would have been a beautiful property once upon a time.
Just a few random snaps around the island.
Our next dive of the day was the White Slave site.
Peacock flounder are all over the place. It’s fun when you find them, following them around as they skim across the ripples in the sand, and then disappear again in an instant, perfectly camouflaged.
It was a long swim across a sandy bottom, and for a while I wasn’t sure we’d find anything interesting, but then the flat bottom suddenly dipped down to reveal fields of coral and tons of fish. Another really beautiful dive.
We found this while we were swimming back in. Looks like some sort of small rail car used for loading salt. Once upon a time I imagine there must have been a pier running through the shallows to the ships waiting in the deeper water.
Tired and hungry after a full day.
We stumbled on this little restaurant, made of a couple of shipping containers, way out of town. The food was good, but what had us coming back time after time was the bocce courts. If I don’t admit it publicly Ali will call me out on it, so I admit, the girls beat the boys rather soundly.

These Dives look great with No lionfish to be seen ,, Are you ready to try harvesting some??
There’s no spearfishing in Bonaire. Apparently you can take a class and then go out with an organized dive, but you absolutely better not be caught out there spearfishing on your own. The entire island is a marine park.
Did you dive Alice In Wonderland yet? If so, how did you find it? Would love to see some pictures!
Does Ali not dive?
No, I don’t dive at this time. Getting the crew fed, dressed, lotion ready – plus helping with gear, it just feels like a lot of work for an hour down below. I’m sure at some point I will give it a try, but for now, I don’t mind my 1 hour break. 🙂
They missed Alice in Wonderland, hit the few around it though.
Looks like good times for the Bums!! Stay safe and very generous of you to offer your hats for a donated amount!!!
Hi Marilyn, with the kids doing the inventory and packaging, we are hoping this is a teaching tool for kindness/giving.
Where are you getting the great skirts, Ali?
Thanks, Maureen. I’ve gotten two cute skirts (albeit a bit hot to wear now) from here. They change it up regularly. https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/38E0C4E6-5D07-45C6-921D-C6BACAA43F0E?ingress=2&visitId=6fc42872-06a7-45f4-b395-f25bef8e5819&ref_=ast_bln
Tropical weather activity is starting to fire up to the north of you. Have you noticed many other cruisers holing up in Bonaire?
Just about every boat in Bonaire is here for that reason. Moorings are basically full. Bit of room in the marina.
