Days Slide By

Shredding waves daily. Ouest is currently our only surfer, but I think Lowe is going to come around here soon. I have to remind myself sometimes that he is a lot younger than her, despite the fact that he runs around with her all day trying to do whatever she does.

I love that lately whenever we walk somewhere these two hang back and just jabber away with each other the whole time.

I grew up playing hockey and baseball. I think I played one year of soccer because my best friend’s team needed another player and his dad was the coach. Otherwise I could have easily gone through life without this sport. But down here sport choices are pretty limited, so I’m trying to take this sport seriously and give it a chance. I stopped in at the International School here in town and asked what sorts of activities I could get the kids in while we were here. My choices? Soccer, or soccer.

There is always a mutt around here somewhere, and they always seem to find their way to our bus where they find generous handouts of bacon and hamburger followed by plates full of dog food and bowls of fresh water. The beauty is that while they are fun to play with for a while, these dogs have a mind of their own, and despite all the freebies and the safe environment they usually take off for the beach again within an hour.

Admiring his handiwork.

There are lots of dirty, sandy, sweaty, naked kids running around this campground every day. Thank goodness for outdoor showers.

Even with the craziness of the Sayulita real-estate market there are properties like this sitting on the beach a ten minute walk from the center of town.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving, Bums!! I know you’re not big on holidays, but hope it’s a good one nonetheless.
A couple of thoughts — Ouest is the only surfer? You’re not riding at all, Pat?? Also, is there an international school in Sayulita? Know there’s one in PV, but would be impressed if there’s one in Sayulita. And come season, there may as well only be one sport (besides surfing) here on Maui as well. EVERY kid plays soccer!
    Have a great day!! 😀

    1. Yep, there is an International School here too. The place is like 50% or more gringo, so it shouldn’t be too surprising. There’s at least two that I know of in PV, maybe more. You can live anywhere these days and put your kids in an English language school if you so choose.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving, Pat, Ali, Ouest, and Lowe! Sounds like you are having a great season. We’re enjoying the beautiful warm weather in central FL. Love that the kids are so active and seem to enjoy each day! Take care…..

  3. Is that graffiti house on the beach really available? Curious where it is, in case you didn’t already buy it to fix up. We’re a long way away, but I would be tempted for some number of minutes until I get kicked in the shin…

Happy thanksgiving and enjoy the days sliding by with kids growing up alongside you both.

    1. It’s been there for quite a few years. I’ve no idea if it is for sale or not. Buying a house isn’t really in my plans. 🙂

  4. I’m just curious, as the mom of young children myself are you guys homeschooling, unschooling, international schooling? I just love the joy of life and love in your photos. You have a beautiful family and I love your stories.

    1. Thanks, Susie. We’ll be homeschooler/unschooler/roadschoolers when the kids reach school age. Right now Ouest would be in kindergarten which we personally don’t consider an appropriate age for kids to sit in a chair and study for hours each day. They should be playing. We teach them constantly about the world around them as we navigate our way through it, and we do sit down on occasion to practice numbers and letters, but as of now there is nothing formal. Except they do spend a ton of time in phy-ed and art class.

      1. Expect you are also reading a lot to your children. Math skills include (at their ages) cooking – measuring cups – larger , smaller, the big bowl , the little bowl – counting- how many etc. If you are and they are doing a lot of verbalizing about what they are doing, you are “home” schooling. Comparing lengths of the ropes and bungee cords and sizes of building etc. are all appropriate for preschoolers and kindergarteners. How many turtles in the dish? Are they fast or slow? So many parents do not take the time to talk with their children in a informal manner about these things in everyday situations. How many steps in a pyramid? Vast amounts of learning are available in phys-ed and art. Your children are having a unique experience. (retired school teacher from the old school K- 3)

        1. Thanks, Lucy. Yes, we read a lot. We’ve finally made the turn and added chapter books into the mix as well. Currently reading the Little House on the Prairie set. There’s nothing better than seeing kids excited about reading.

      2. Can’t wait to see where your next adventures take you all! Your kids are blessed to have you as parents, and I’m sure you are beyond grateful to nurture those two through a childhood of creativity, activity and curiosity.

  5. I noticed that you include a breakdown of your camera equipment on your new site but I don’t see anything that can safely get wet. How do you take your surfing pictures where the camera may get wet?

  6. Blog more !!!!!!! We live abord and travel a lot but are on a dock yr !! Not sure but seams like your blogs are farther and farther apart now !!!! Don’t stop !! Luv it
