Coney Island on a late summer day. What could be better if you’re an Italian kid from Brooklyn?
Or, if you’re not in a movie, then what could be a better day than this, just before the rain and winds from yet another hurricane/tropical storm/whatever show up from somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico?
It was a little iffy when we first got out there after about an hour on the train.
Yeah, so we took the kids to the sideshow. No photography allowed inside, otherwise I could have maybe showed you some of the amazing things going on in there—sword swallowers, fire breathers, snake charmers, and electric ladies. The snake lady asked for volunteers, and always eager to give my kids a laugh, I headed up towards the stage. It wasn’t until I was standing up there that I realized Ouest had followed me right on up there. So she got to take part in the daring, astounding, breathtaking, death-defying feat of holding and kissing a giant boa right alongside of me.
Easily the most fun ever had in a ferris wheel. The cars slide down these tracks as you go around and it’s actually pretty exciting as you feel like the car is about to fly right off of the wheel.
Lowe tends to carry the fun one step too far every time.
I think these are the coolest motorcycles ever.
Paul’s daughter clearly is the best daughter. Look at how she loves her papa.
Of course we found the Mexican lady cutting up mangos as fast as she could hand them out.
Winding down after a fun day. All in all I can totally see why this place has endured all these years. I’ve never been here before and yet I still felt nostalgic for the place. Really, what could be better than a carnival on a beach? And man, we didn’t even make it to the beach.

I see some kids having a great time!..I bet they will never forget the experience….Along with all the others you’ve shared with them…
The East coast is in some ways the same as the West….And yet different……More crowded for sure….

Pat this sounds like one of your best outings your family has had with this trip to New York and it really seems to be a big
surprise to you.
Glad to see you all enjoying the East Coast

Are you sleeping in the car someplace, or has that been left behind?
No, we don’t have the tent up in Manhattan. The truck is at a friend’s house outside the city.
Paul’s daughter has a drinking problem.
I thought she was delivering it to her dear old dad, like any wonderful daughter would. 🙂
WOW Coney island..could spend the whole people watching for sure.!!!
the weather is perfect here , waves are up and winds offshore. Also John runs Two surf shops with all kinds of gear— and his apartment is a block from Dewey beach. We are 3 miles from Bethany . Just so yo know.
Looks like it was a great day… But no Cyclone ride?
It was closed, and I didn’t ask why.
Plus the kids were not tall enough to ride (must be 54″) – I’m sure they would have been fine with us riding it alone. 😉
A reason to return ! Thanks for the memories so many happy afternoons there with my grandparents!
That is similar to both Atlantic City and Wildwood, NJ’s boardwalks but looks more fun.
Santa Cruz, CA, too. We had a fun day there a few years ago.
New York pizza vs. Chicago pizza?!?!
I love the convenience of having a slice of New York pizza available on just about any street. And it’s good. Yes, even the $1 cheese slices. And big. So, I’m a big fan of that. But when you want to sit down, because your knees are going to buckle from the deliciousness overtaking all of your senses, then New York (even proper sit-down restaurant pizza) doesn’t even compare to Chicago (and especially to the world’s best, Lou Malnattis). But yeah, I love having pizza every day while walking around New York. You can’t do that in Chicago.
We were at Coney Island on July 4 this year, it was a madhouse. Spent about $40 shooting water into a clown’s mouth to win a $1 stuffed toy, which we promptly gave to a deserving child. It was the best $40 we ever spent.
We liked Coney Island(very crowded when we visited), but Ocean City by far my kid’s favorite beach. I should say boardwalk as we did not end up swimming at the beach either. All other beaches are compared to it when we visit them. Check it out if you head south(its 30 miles or so south of Atlantic City)A great boardwalk at Atlantic City as well, just not as much for the kids. Beach trips are totally different on the East Coast compared to the beaches I am used to in Florida. There is much more entertainment and less actual swimming it seems. Really enjoying your trip as it is bringing back memories from a East Coast RV trip we made several years ago. Plan 2 to 3 times more days than you think it would take to see DC. We spent a couple weeks there and still didnt see all we would like.
Good to hear about Ocean City as we are heading there next! Agree about the beach scenes, and let me just say do not even try a Minnesota beach. 🙂
Jason is referring to Ocean City, New Jersey. Many say that it’s the best family beach spot on the Jersey shore. FYI it is a dry town — no alcohol sold anywhere within city limits. The “other” Ocean City is in Maryland. Similar in having a boardwalk, but not quite the same — more restaurants and bars.
That’s where we were talking about, too. Thanks for the tip on the dry town designation, we’ll go in prepared.
