Calm

Forty miles of easy motorsailing, emphasis on motor, and we are anchored off of Isla Isabela, a bird sanctuary. Going north in this area of the Pacific tends to not work so well as far as the sailing goes. The winds are light and from the northwest pretty consistently. And as the land trends to the northwest this puts us pretty much dead on the whole way up. Fortunately light winds more often than not mean no winds, especially at night and in the mornings. It will never cease to amaze me just how calm a place the ocean can be. I remember during our VW trip we spent a lot of time camping on beaches and I would look out there and think to myself, “How in the hell did we ever do it?” From shore the ocean always seems so much more forbidding a place, but out here we find ourselves just sort of plodding along without any real cares. Of course that can all change very quickly, but with weather forecasting today the odds of any surprises on short trips is pretty minimal.
