Lowe loves VW bugs. “Bug!!!!” he squeals every single time he sees one—which in Mazatlan is twice per block at least. And he knows that I share his love, so every one he sees he also says, “Papa, papa, papa…” until I acknowledge him with a, “Whoa, that’s a cool bug. Thanks for showing me Lowe.” And then he smiles ear to ear and we can move on. The whole thing is pretty freaking adorable, and soooooo boy. Not that Ouest doesn’t get into the bugs too—I just think that if Lowe were to suddenly forget about bugs she would forget about them too.
Anyway, today we spotted this gem. I think it is beautiful. Lowe was in love. Ouest announced she wanted a picture of it for her picture book, so pictures of it is what she got. We spent twenty minutes with her, taking pictures.
And check out that building in the background. There are buildings like this everywhere in Mazatlan. Just about every block. It was a gorgeous building at one time, but has slid into disrepair as things tend to do over the years. It wrapped around the entire block looking like that, and inside were all sorts of beautiful archways and wood beamed ceilings—and crumbling concrete, and piles of garbage.
This is totally Mazatlan’s character, wrapped up in a bug and a building.

Buy it! The house and bug. You know you want to. Do they still serve fresh seafood cocktails on the beach? Those were the days. Take care!
You’re right, I think that would be an awesome adventure. Maybe someday. Not yet. As for the seafood cocktails, yes, there are still dozens of little shacks on the beach serving them up.
Oh that first photo of Lowe and the Bug is a gem! And the cars and buildings you describe remind me a lot of Cuba. We saw so many gorgeous buildings and cars just waiting for some TLC when we were cruising there.
I miss my Bug. My fabulous 1977 Super Beetle convertible. *sniff* I imagine she is living somewhere in Mexico (I owned her in Texas, all old Texan cars go to Mexico to die). I hope she still has her purpley blue exterior, her beautiful white interior. I hope who ever owns her now knows that when she doesn’t want to run, all she wants is you to tickle her idle arm and give her a little bit of extra gas, but not too much.
Thanks for the fond memory today and Lowe, I still love bugs. <3
Cidnie,
I saw her the other day. She’s doing just fine. Been well taken care of all these years by a lovely old man.
It’s okay.
Looking it up, Mexico produced the old style Beetle through 2008.
“In 1996, Mexico became the last country to produce the old Beetle and since 1998 the car has been sold only there”

I knew a lot of Beetle parts came from Mexico, now i know why. Another testament to the simplicity and reliability of the old VW engine is they (or copies) are modified to use in ultralight planes.
It’s a shame they stopped at all. Hard to understand based on the popularity here. In Maz there are at least two bugs per city block.
Very cute photos of the kids. When hubby and I first started dating he drove a red VW bug….not exactly a chick magnet but he had other assets. Just started reading your book “Live on the Margin”….love the under lying humor/tone. Found your blog via ‘Gone with the Wynns’ The photo of the kids on the boat reminded me of my kids plus my maiden name is the same as yours….rare in the U.S. so just had to buy your book…oh, subject matter did help 🙂 Safe travels!
VW bug not a chick magnet? Surely you jest. Ha, welcome Miss Schulte. Glad to have you with us, and happy to hear you’re enjoying the book too.
