Bloody Brooklyn

In our unintentional quest to go places that make native New Yorkers laugh, we took the tram across the East River to Roosevelt Island. I’d never heard of Roosevelt Island, or the tram, but hey, kids love a good tram ride, and it’s part of the transit system, so we were in.

The tram itself was great. It’s huge, it gives great views of the city, and the windows are spotless for us tourists to press our cameras against.

The island itself is sort of a weird place. It’s really quiet—in a “it’s too quiet here” sort of way. The architecture is Soviet chic, the restaurants are mediocre, and our kids couldn’t have cared less. They had a great time. First climbing trees, then splashing in a fountain at the park, and finally just goofing around along the waterfront. It was hot, and this was a decent way to hang out, get a different view of the city, and not have to expend a lot of energy.

Two days later this sign was gone. Coincidence?

The Habana Outpost. Home of the greatest Cuban Sandwich I’ve ever tasted, and also site of a bloody Brooklyn brawl. Lowe got in a terrible fight with a slippery chair while driving his car along it.

Fort Greene Flea Market. You know your kids are well versed in minimalism when you can walk out of a flea market without buying anything.

  1. Wonderful shots. Love the cable car photos, I’m always intrigued by the rooftop water tanks in New York.

  2. There’s a story in that picture of the guy running up the stairs to the girl with outstretched arms. What’s going on there?

  3. You amaze me. I’ve followed, mostly silently, since the beginning. I admire your parenting, your photography, and your lives in general. I just have to repeat what many have said; that you’re children will truly be citizens of the world as are you. Thank you for maintaining such a web site and sharing it with us. I look forward to every new post.

  4. Do ya think they would deliver that sammich to 300 miles NE of your mom’s house???…..
