It’s been a rough ten days or so around here and we’re only now starting to come around. But if I hate anything more than hearing about people’s illnesses I can’t think what it is at the moment. Though I venture to guess I may have said that about more than a few things at some point in the past.
So Grammy joined us here in La Paz a couple of days ago. We’ve been less than gracious hosts I’m afraid, and we haven’t done much of anything. We rented a little house maybe a mile down the road from the marina and have spent most of our time hanging out here. Today we did manage a quick trip to the beach. It’s fun seeing how much the kids love having her here with us. Ouest has been all over her, hugging her, kissing her, telling her she loves her, asking her to read to her, to sit next to her at dinner, and on and on. Lowe took his cue from Ouest and immediately warmed up to her as well. Grammy is eating it up.
A few days ago I was walking around town when I realized I was in the neighborhood of a restaurant a friend had told us about. I looked around where I thought it was supposed to be but couldn’t find it so I asked an old lady that was out front of her house sweeping. She repeated the name and thought, and thought, and thought, but seemed sure she’d never heard of it. So I gave up, walked to the end of the block, turned left, and there it was. Less than a hundred yards from her house. I suppose the idea of going out to eat right next to your own house would make no sense to a seventy-year-old who had probably cooked a million meals herself, but the fact that she’d never heard of this popular place was pretty amusing to me.

Glad to see you guys back on line, . . . was getting worried. Gla dyou are through the illness which came your familys’ way. Now, back to showing us all how to live the good life!
Glad to hear eveybody’s back on top!
Man you guys are lucky to be so close to the US, making it easier to have those grandparent visits. Mexico gets major bonus points for that reason. We’ve been catching hell from the grandparents lately. They’re acting like flying from Seattle to Miami, Miami to Lima, Lima to Santiago is some big deal or something. Sheesh Mom, it’s only 3 planes and like 23 hours of travel… buck up.
Glad you guys are feeling better. Amazing photography, as always. -TREE
Tell me about it. It’s one of the big reasons we’re still here. It’s nice having everybody back home just a few hour flight from us, whereas SEA to Santiago is a different story indeed. 🙂
These photos are beautiful. And the kids are adorable. I’ve been following you for a while and I’ve noticed your photography has gotten better and better. Just curious – do you have any references or tricks you’ve picked up… a book to recommend, maybe? I’m trying to better my own photography, but have to admit I don’t fully understand my fancy SLR…looking for some inspirational reading (i.e. not the manual).
Thanks Tasha. No, we haven’t read any photography books, though I’d like to. If anybody has a good recommendation I’m open to it too. I’ve picked up a few tips from the internet, but for the most part I think it is like anything, practice, practice, practice. We take a hundred times more pics than we used to so I think we’re bound to improve.
One hint that I think takes a beginning photog to the next level (however small that jump may be) is this: Stop centering everything! Google the Rule of Thirds. Just about every picture benefits from this simple simple method.
That ice cream shop has delicious ice cream!! My favourite is one scoop of coconut with one scoop of lime. Mexico does lime ice cream well! Have you gone for Rancho Viejo dinner yet? The arracherra is excellent. I LOVE street tacos…all tacos, with a squeeze of lime….but Rancho Viejo isn’t street tacos per say….it’s sit down, with super tender meet….the usual, radish, cilantro, lime, hot sauce tray of fixings.
Yes we’ve been to Rancho Viejo many times. Particularly fond of their stuffed potatoes, though everything we’ve had has been pretty good.
