The Mazatlan Aquarium is right down the street from us and is actually pretty well regarded as far as that sort of thing goes. Always looking for new ways to entertain the kids we figured sharks just might do the trick.
And it was a pretty nice aquarium—nice enough in fact that they are building on a huge new addition with the fancy pants walk-through style tank. Anyway, we wandered through the fish tanks, made the sad condescending faces that we all do every time we visit zoos and aquariums and really any place where an animal is not in its natural environment. “Tsk, tsk, that poor _______.”
After admiring the fish for a suitable period of time we wandered outside where they had a couple of aviaries full of attack birds. By attack birds I specifically mean an adorably fuzzy looking little brown duck that kept pecking my ankles, and a giant pelican who hogged the sidewalk. Birds. Nobody ever gets sad over birds in cages.
Then of course there were goats, crocodiles, deer, and bunnies. Why goats? Why bunnies? Why indeed. Questions that can’t be answered. Ouest pet the bunnies and Lowe screamed at them. He screams at everything these days. It’s his form of communication, and it is unbelievably high pitched. The poor bunnies scrambled for cover.
Eventually it was time for the seal show. Hey, we have to work for our food, why should seals be any different? He jumped, he splashed, he smiled, clapped, and waved—and eventually he posed for pictures. We asked Ouest if she wanted her picture taken with the seal. “Get bent,” would have been her reply if she were aware of the term. Lowe doesn’t get asked yet, because he can’t talk. He just gets told what he is going to do. Lowe, we’re going to take a picture with this 400 pound slimy monster and you are going to like it.
Did he like it?
On the way home Ali asked Ouest if she had fun.
“Yeah.”
“What was your favorite part of the aquarium?”
Without hesitation, “The bunnies!”

New blog layout and, now, a normal way to make comments!!! This just keeps getting better. Maybe there really IS a Santa Claus.
What do you mean maybe there is? 🙁
Love the new look! What software are you using? WordPress or something within your website? I still havent had a chance to do anything with my blog/website since we last emailed, Ali, but my goal is to do it this spring, now that I got rights reverted back to me for my 7 earliest books (publisher folded, yay!). I take os many pics on my layovers and really need a blog format to feature them like you do with yours. And I prefer a simple and clean format like you all have. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you!
Hi Sue, glad you like the new site. Yes, it’s a WordPress blog, Phoenix theme. Awesome news on the publisher folding. Being in control of your work is HUGE! Watch your sales take off.
You upgraded the Blog theme, looks very nice!! IMHO: easier to read, and the photos seem to be larger and integrated as thumbnails too – great work Pat and Ali…
I’m almost done reading Live on the Margin, it’s actually the first ‘book’ that I have read on the iPad Kindle app (I give you credit for motivating me to install the Kindle app FINALLY – LOL).
Enjoying the book and blog this holiday week, and extremely jealous of the warm weather you guys have in Mexico (even Los Angeles is <55 degrees!) – thanks again for all the inspiration, laughs, stories and knowledge.
Happy Holidays from Erika & Jer
