An Antigua Day

Spanish colonial architecture and great volcano views. Antigua is a beautiful place.

There is another bedroom in the house, with two beds, but there was never really any doubt that we’d all end up together in this room. Who can resist bunk beds?

Just like with living on a boat, the part we enjoy most about a home is the ability to live outdoors.

Parque Central. It’s still easy to envision what life was like here hundreds of years ago.

The famous Santa Catalina Arch. 325 years-old, originally built so nuns could cross the street from the convent to the school without being seen, and now used as a setting for postcard photos.

DVD salesmen are somehow still doing business in the digital age.

The most amazing table full of tacos we’ve ever had outside of Mexico. Appropriately named Fridas will be a regular haunt this month.

I love how many people are smiling in this photo, if you look closely.

Tanque La Unión, where once upon a time women gathered to do laundry.

All walks seem to circle back to Parque Central.

Road trip!

  1. Looks like an absolutely stunning place to continue your excellent adventure. And those tacos, wow! ❤️

  2. We ate in a restaurant about 2 blocks from the central park, with the family of the girl whose educational costs we will be sponsoring. Although my wife is fluent in Spanish, a transladora was needed, as the girl and her parents spoke K’iche’. The girl will start first grade soon, and is looking forward to learning Spanish.

    1. Very cool. Sounds like you had a really nice visit in Antigua. Ouest and Lowe are both in Spanish school here. They are rocking it.

  3. Love your pictures. They bring back great memories. We spent New Year’s Eve 1979 in a really cheap hotel, El Arco, right down the street from the arch. The pictures of Volcán Agua are wonderful. The views from the top are amazing. On a clear day you can see the Pacific coast.

  4. As a wheelchair user, I’m just curious. Do you ever see anyone young and disabled around these places? Can they get around at all?

    1. Unfortunately, Michael, we don’t see wheelchairs very often and when we do it’s usually older folks being accompanied by family members. The sidewalks are just terrible for the disabled.

  5. What’s up with the white church facing Parque Central? The facade looks awesome but in the drone shot it seems to be missing the roof.

    1. The church was destroyed in an earthquake in 1700s, the front was rebuilt, but the back you can still visit. Will go see them this week.

  6. Omg, those tacos look amazing. I was thrilled to find the best al pastor I’ve ever had, just a 4 minute walk from my AirBnB, in a part of CDMX I was unfamiliar with. But now I’m gonna have to go find some seafood tacos. That was pretty much the only thing I hated leaving in Playa.

Loved hearing about Ouest and Lowe’s videos. It’s been such a trip watching those two grow and change over the years. Hard to believe they’re so big already.

    1. Fridas here in Antigua, oh yum and a block away. The comment below is from the manager of Fridas! We will visit her this week when my mom is in town — Taco Tuesdays (or Wednesdays, or…)!

My goodness I no longer have little kids! Lowe turns 8 this weekend, seriously when did that happen. We were doing slow-mo funny videos jumping off the steps here at our rental in Antigua, I’m sure the neighbors were wondering what the heck was happening.

  7. Hey Patrick I am
Following you on your dog story.
Also like your picture of the restaurante Fridas. Thank you for visiting and writing about us. I have been running that spot for over 24years.
    Good luck with everything!
