Here’s what a couple of our Wanderers had to say in our Basecamp chat on the last trading day of 2023:
Meanwhile, in Minnesota…
Winter continues to not look much like the Minnesota winters of my youth. However, indoor activities still rule December. Lots of cards, lots of dice.
The lake froze over, briefly, but was never safe beyond a few feet from shore.
Ouest tacked on another trip around the sun.
We’d never done one of these puzzle/escape rooms before, and we were pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was to figure it out together.
Ran-Ham Bowling Alley is just shy of 100 years old, and it shows with every dent in the alley and chip in the ball, but you have to love this sort of neighborhood place, regardless. Not one of us could manage even a 100-point game, but who cares.
Walking around downtown Stillwater.
Ouest and I went out for sushi and a show. Didn’t really expect to like this meal as much as we did, being that we’re a gazillion miles from actual fresh tuna, but as I write this I’m getting craving it again.
The outside wall of First Avenue is iconic. The show this night wasn’t on the First Ave stage, though, it was down in the basement at their 7th St. Entry.
Both the opening act and the headliner put on a good show and I had a great time hanging out with Ouest. Fingers crossed she’ll let me tag along with her to some more shows in the future.
The martial arts studio down the road is always nice enough to let Lowe show up for a few weeks whenever we are in town.
We headed down to the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis for A Christmas Carol. ‘Tis the season. There’s a nice patio overlooking the Mississippi and the Stone Arch Bridge.
Ali and her sister, Toni.
There really isn’t a bad seat in the Guthrie.
A warm fog lifting over the lake’s ice one night. The ice would be completely gone soon after.

Happy birthday, Ouest, from your Hawaiian Uncle Mark.
I was just telling the kids that the pictures have you have changed for the first time in at least 10 years. You look like a different person, in a good way!
Have a great year out there on the open ocean. You’re coming into some of my favorite country in the entire planet. Byron is named after an Australian surf town. Best to your family.l
Happy Birthday Ouest. OMG I almost forgot my own granddaughter’s birthday this year. ( same as Ouest) I did get her card in the mail but a week early. At 85, I am realizing how important good memories are. You and your family are creating a lifetime of memories. I am so glad that Max and I connected with you at the Great Race. You continue to bring joy into my life as I read your adventures. Many best wishes to all of you in 2024.
Oh my goodness, I love that Ouest got her nose pierced. It’s so cute and it suits her. 🥰
