Recently we were contacted by the producers of an upcoming reality-style parenting television show. They seemed to think we would be the perfect fit for the show which is to be about unusual parenting styles. Two Americans having kids in Mexico to live on a sailboat qualifies as that I suppose.
So we e-mailed back and forth and then a couple days ago I talked with the producer on the phone. We had a really nice chat but when I got off the phone I said to Ali, “It sounds interesting, and the call went good, but I got the feeling they were fishing for drama.”
Then today we got an e-mail that said, “The only problem we have with casting your family for the show is that there is no conflict. If there is any sort of pressure from an outside source that threatens your lifestyle then you guys would be great for the show.”
Nope, no drama at all sailing around with two small kids on an old boat. None whatsoever.
Actually I get where they’re coming from—without fighting and unhappiness there is no show. Who wants to watch a show about us sailing happily from one beautiful location to another having fun while parenting our kids? That would just be ridiculous.
Old Town and the beach today. Ouest is going to be one sad girl when Lea leaves us.

Yeah, got to have conflict to make a story. Ah fame, how fleeting. Great photos as usual.
Correctomundo. They don’t do happy, content, etc.
Really? Did they not consider the beef v chicken taco daily dilemna? What about worrying about if Lowe is allergic to peanut butter? DT and I will never star in a RV travelogue TV show either because we are just too dang happy.
That is why I do follow you… To see the happiness and contentment! Oh and the pictures!
Yup, no drama, no story.
I’ve worked in film and TV for long enough to know that I will never, ever, under any circumstances allow a TV crew into a: my house and b: my life.
I think you probably had a lucky escape. All they would do is to deliberately cause drama, that you could live without.
Hello Bum Family, I am amazed at your unconventional lifestyle and will definitely buy a copy of Live On The Margin (Are you on iBooks?) Anyway I’ve caught a serious case of wanderlust… I’ve spent the last three days reading your entire blog starting from 2003. I’ve finally caught up today and cant wait for more (vicarious) adventures…
You guys are truly inspirations!
Happy Sailing,
Your number one fan from the Cayman Islands
Hey, can’t you say how upset your folks get at not getting any phone calls? Perhaps some footage of your Dad tearing his hair out when he doesn’t hear from you for weeks on end? Some tears from Ouest when Lea leaves?
I so want to see you both on the TV!!
Perhaps you have never actually seen one of these so called ‘reality’ shows. There are all about the dramatic conflict moment repeated over and over before and after each commercial break. Pure drivel. If you are willing to carp, criticize and find fault with each other they will be glad to air it to a nationwide audience.
Run, don’t walk.
I’ve been following your blog for several years now and am currently reading Live on the Margin. You have given a fantastic glimpse into your lives and lifestyle while seemingly protecting yourselves personally. Reality t.v. would cheapen your whole experience. It would take you to the bottomless pit of the North American “culture”. I applaud you for having a life that doesn’t live down to the expectations of American reality t.v.
